Previous to our participation in the Bowery Babes Easter Egg Hunt, the closest I ever came to Easter was begging my mom for chocolate bunnies at the drugstore as a kid. The bunnies were always hollow, which never ceased to surprise and disappoint. Or stop me from begging again the following year.
We are Jewish, in case you are not already aware, and although we have pictures of Mazzy destroying a piece of matzah, grimacing at charoset and crying with boredom during the sedar, showcasing our Easter pictures seemed a lot more fun. Or at least more colorful. Passover is always very very biege.
Why else was this day different from all other days?
Usually, I’m the one with the camera. Which means we’ve got lots of shots of Mazzy. A few of my husband. And NONE of me. On rare occasions, Mike strips me of my photo-taking duties and takes it on himself. He says the reason he doesn’t do it more often is because I ask to see each picture after it’s taken and then I make “a face”.
But since it was Easter and we were on our first official egg hunt (that didn’t involve finding a brunch place at noon on a Sunday in downtown Manhattan without a forty minute wait), I let Mike document while I fully participated in the festivities with my baby girl.
I even kept my “faces” to myself.
Mike’s Photo Documentary: “Egg Hunt In The City” starring Mazzy, myself and her good friends, Ella and Carson:
“Bunnies? Candy? Let’s DO THIS THING!”
“WAIT. So you expect me to dive into that dirty swamp to retrieve a couple of fake plastic eggs? This was not my understanding of the event.”
“Alright, if this is all really going to go down, I’m gonna need something to put these things in. What do you mean you don’t have a basket? MOM!!!! Sometimes you are so JEWISH.”
“Mazzy! Would you like to put your eggs in my basket?”
“Nope. I’ve got this thing figured out.”
“Quiet! Nobody move! My super egg-sensing powers tell me there is a red one to my right.”
“Hmmm. These eggs don’t look biodegradable. Please make sure you throw them in the appropriate trash bin.”
“MOM! Don’t just stand there! There’s an egg underneath that dirty newspaper! And one inside that unconscious guy’s shoe…”
“This is so much better than looking for a big tasteless cracker wrapped in a napkin.”
“I’ve looked everywhere besides up your nose. You mind checking it out for me?”
“Mother. You mean to tell meβ you had me picking through NYC garbage for eggs, when all the while there was a perfectly lovely spread offering snacks? The lengths you grown-ups go to for photo-taking opportunities…”
And just to show-off more of my husband’s camera skills, below is Ella looking cute as ever. (I’ve given her a bum rap but we are on better terms now.)
And here is Mazzy showing off the drool that killed my iPhone.
Whaddaya think? How’d the husband do?
I think she needs just a little something – I would do a pedicure gift certificate or a lunch out just the two of you. I know those are things my mother enjoys.
I think a bouquet of flowers and artwork from Harlow would be the perfect way to say thank you to grandma.
A great thank you I try to give my mom is a pedicure out with me. So often she’all babysit my kids or we’ll hang out with them…it’s nice to just allow her to spend time with her daughter alone. And bonus for me!
I think Grammy deserves a care package including one on one time with you! I would give anything to spend the day with my Gram again. She would certainly love her 5 great grand-kids! Does your Grammy want to take mine for a week π
120 minute “bliss age” at bliss spa and lunch at Norma’s with her granddaughters and you.
I would get her a really big gift certificate to a fancy restaurant that she wouldn’t go to herself because it’s too expensive.
I would provide a ticket to Park City but since that can be pricey and kinda lonely –
I would let the girl’s make her a special thank you card and maybe bring her favorite coffee drink, lunch or make her dinner. I so appreciate when anyone takes care of dinner for me.
Our gran-nanny always appreciates some amazing coffee and a book she’d love to recommend to her bookclub – maybe Grammy would too! With a photo bookmark of the kiddos of course π
Spa day for Grammy!
As a thank you to your mom, maybe you could take her to a spa day and then go have drinks, just the two of you? I think one thing my mom misses since I had my daughter is the old mother-daughter dynamic we used to have. Now that I’m a mom I tend to acknowledge her more as grandma than as my mom, and I think she would appreciate the old familiar comfort of a daughter needing and appreciating her company. She is coming to visit for Mother’s Day, and I’m committed to appreciating her for being my mom, a person I value a person whose guidance and friendship I value as an adult that I make time for, not just “Gramma.”
Spa day for grammy! She deserves it! Sick kids are no joke… ????
Grammy deserves a vacation! All grandmas do actually. You should take her on your next blog related trip – maybe with the girls too. A three generation vacation would be fun!
I think a nice note from you, flowers and a gift card to pamper her self. Maybe even make it a mommy daughter date for you and her!
A massage and some type of craft from Harlow thanking her for taking good care of her.
How about a swag bag just for gram?
I bet a fitting thank you for Grammy would be a date with you and your sister. Favorite lunch or dinner spot, wine and pedicures, something where you have some time to catch up. My mom never needs a thank you for looking after my daughter but she certainly relishes in a little time with me too.
For my moms birthday I just bought her a subscription box for one of her favorite hobbies. She’s loving it!
I would have Harlow make her a thank you card, and get some truffles, a nice bottle of wine and a gift certificate for a spa day (maybe with you if you guys don’t get much kid free time together?!)
After losing both of my grandmas last year, i wanted something I could wear that would make me feel closer to them. I found their handwriting and had it made into a necklace. I think Grammy would love a necklace with the girls handwriting on it of either I love you or Grammy on it…..or better yet: both!
Grammy definitely deserves something hand made from Harlow and Mazzy, and a visit with both Mazzy and Harlow, where you do all the housework so that she can just enjoy the day with her grandkids. Alternately, you could invite her to your home, or send her off for a vacation to pamper herself (not sure if she’d like to go alone).
Put the kids to work! Grammy would love something homemade- let them paint some mugs and fill them with special teas, coffee or cocoa. π
A gift basket that includes goodies for home and some gift cards for a mani/pedi/spa day
Massage certificate!
I think Grammy would love a special necklace or something like that where you have it made from a drawing from the girls. Those are so cute! Way to be a trooper Grammy!
Take her for a manicure and pedicure!
I think something thoughtful from Harlow like a picture card thanking her as well as a something special from you. Maybe a day at the spa just the two of you!
There are some neat jewelry ideas: artwork by the girls or their initials would be super cute as a bracelet. Or Pandora Charms.
Toddler Mazzy is sooooo cute!!
For Grandma–booze. Lots of booze. Or a nice lunch or gift card to her favorite store. And promises to not share germs again! π
I think she knows how thankful you are. You trust her enough to leave your babies with her in the first place. Hmm but if she’s a tea or coffee drinker maybe have Harlow and Mazzy decorate 2 mugs and fill with her favorite tea or coffee and add a sweet to indulge. Remind her she can relax! She doesn’t have to take care of young children most of the time and can drink her cup while still hot!
Grandma sounds like the best. How about a three generation day doing exactly the things she loves to do (museums? Lunch? Spa?) with her three favorite girls?
For all her hard work, Grammy should have Mazzy visit for a week!
I would get Grammy something she wouldn’t normally buy or do for herself. My mother isn’t a big spender on herself so I would get her a gift card to her favorite store or a gift card for a mani and pedi. Or I might send her flowers or buy her some plants for her yard.
A necklace with the names of you and the girls and your sister and her kids? Or just the grandkids? Etsy has some cute options. Your mom rocks!
A spa day or fun grandma gift. There are fun necklaces that you can get the girls names on.
I think Grammy should get a massage or spa day. If that is not her thing, then doing a fun day out with you and the grandkids might be nice. A paint your own pottery or something of that nature where the grandkids project could be what Grammy gets to take home as a thank you!
Get Grammy a mani /pedi (to say thank you) and a big bottle of airborne (to build up her immune system for next time)
Grammy needs a spa day!! ????????????????????????
I’d treat Grammy to a lunch date with YOU to say thank you. You always report that she says she never gets enough one-on-one time with her daughter so I’d give her the gift of time – and food!
Spa day!
I would get Grammy some really good eye cream — to show off how rested she looks from her time away babysitting – to induce more babysitting down the road, even when all is sick π
Have a girls’ day with Grandma! Do lunch, a movie, maybe a little shopping, honestly she probably won’t care as long as she gets to be with her grand babies !!!!
First, how little and adorable is Mazzy in this post?! Cuteness personified!
Second, for Grammy- I know it’s cliche, but flowers are always nice. Maybe a nice lunch, or a place that does a fun tea?
A genuine thank you for being there when you need her and and for being an amazing mom/grandma can sometimes go farther than any gift. It is so nice to hear that you are doing a good job as a parent.
Maybe for Grammy a spa package, painting class, or crafting gift card if she enjoys those things. And seeing this post with Mazzy’s delicious baby face is so so sweet!!
This JUST happened to us. We are visiting my parents for Easter and there is not enough room in the house for all of us (five) so we got a hotel with the youngest and left the two older girls with the grandparents. Wake up call that our oldest Josie was throwing up. Oy. Ummm… Spa day? Massage? If you get good ideas let me know ????????
Girls day to spoil Grammy! Pedicures, brunch, shopping, etc! She earned it π
A photo collage of her and the girls. You can do it on a photo canvas/mug/blankets
A gift card to a spa or getting her nails done! Pampering is always something great!
This is trite but a massage would be a great thank you gift.
I always like to gift my MIL (who helps us out tremendously) with a gift certificate for either a mani/pedicure or a haircut/blowdry at a salon.
Grammy is amazing! I think a spa day would be nice, I love a spa day. Or maybe a gift basket with some spa products, gift card to her favorite restaurant, and some of her favorite things. A night at a bed and breakfast. Anything relaxing!
I’ve always had great responses to pajama grams, maybe combine with a gift card for a delivery dinner, for a be lazy at home night.
I always love giving wall/shelf items that say something about being a grandma, as well as a gift card to either her favorite restaurant, coffee shop or somewhere she gets her hair or nails done
Grandma needs a day out with her girls. Shopping, lunch & lots of fun! β€οΈ
You could have the girls make a little gift basket of homemade crafts and stuff you know your mom will like as a nice thank you.
Go with her to a mini mother-daughter vacation. Just a day at a spa or a couple of days at some favorite place for her, to relax, share and enjoy π
I think Grammy should first get ” apocalypse prep box” compete with purell, Lysol , Clorox wipes , mask, gloves, tissue and hazmat suit… and a bottle of vodka. This should Included in that box would also be lovely thank you note (?by note I mean drawings from the girls) as well as a gift certificate ( for her or the both you ) for a nice spa day or afternoon.
Maid service for a deep clean!
I think Grammy deserves a treat!! If I was you, I would get her tickets to a play or a show! Maybe just the two of you, or for her and a friend! ????
I think that Grammy should get a day with a house cleaner, to clean and disinfect from the week! While the cleaner is there, she should head to the spa for some pampering!!!!
I’M NOT GOOD AT PICKING GIFTS, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO GAMMYS YOU HAVE TO GET THEM THE BEST. YOU SHOULD GIVE HER PHOTOS AND PICTURES THAT HARLOW AND MAZZY HAVE MADE. PUT THEM IN A COLLAGE FRAME.
Something from Harlow thanking her and maybe a spa day for Grammy.
It may not be very creative, but a gift card to a favorite restaurant or movie tickets (or both!) is nice. Basically, treat Grammy to whatever it is that she would find relaxing. I know I need a break after a week straight with the kid… π
Grammy deserves a stay at a great hotel, with spa services and room service!! And then maybe another attempt at a fun weekend with her grandkids when no one is sick π
Grammy needs some relaxation time, a gift certificate for a massage or mani/pedi would be really nice. The girls could even decorate a fun box or tote bag to give it to her in!
Also the baby pics from Easter are adorable! Love the flashback!
I would send Grammy on relaxing vacation – maybe that resort you checked out a couple months ago?
Or a spa day!
I would get a photographer to get some picture with you, grandma, and the two girls!
Flowers are always nice and I feel like Grammy probably doesn’t expect or want anything for doing it, simple is sometimes best!
Grammy was probably happy to help and to be there for your sick one.
How about: a sick care package (tissues, cleaning wipes etc) for your next trip away (to make her laugh) and then some time alone with you.
And a book. A lovey book for some quiet alone time.
I am thinking spa day for grandma too but I bet Grandma would love something homemade from Harlow and maybe a gift card to her favorite shop.
I say you get her a spa certificate!
Grammy took one for the team! She deserves a spa day and a thank you card from Harlow!
Send the kids to Grammy. That’s really what she wants after all!
Beautiful pictures as a thank you for the girls.
Mother-daughter mani & pedis or a little thank you shopping trip with mom!
Toddler Mazzy hunting for eggs is amazing! What a great throwback post.
A great gift I gave my mom for helping with our twins was a day at the spa to pamper herself. She loves getting a massage and facial and her nails done but will very rarely do it for herself.
Grammy is awesome! I think you should make sure to direct her to all the comments from complete strangers who wish she was part of their family–it’s so clear how much she loves all of you and how hard she works to be such an important, joyful, and involved part of your family. I agree with some of the previous commenters that you and she should go out just the two of you. Moms always love to spend time with their babies, even the grown up ones.
You could gift Grammy with a spa visit and either take her to lunch or gift card that too! And if Grammy is a more relax at home type of girl then you could get a new robe and slippers, candles, bath fizzes or bubble bath, etc. and bring the spa home to her. Taking care of a toddler can be a lot of work, esp when you’re both sick, and I’m sure she could use some downtime!
It was very cool to read that old post! To say thank you, maybe a day at the spa or simply a nice dinner. π Happy Easter!
I would say a Mom/Daughter day. No kids, just a day for you and her to reconnect and hang out.
I bet Grammy would love a day with you – take her to lunch and out shopping or to a museum. Or buy her some new towels since hers are all barfed upon π
Love the throwback post! Mazzy was such a doll ( not that she’s any less adorable now). I think a girls’ spa day for grammy would be nice. Mani and pedi’s for everyone followed by a blowout and then high tea.
I think she needs a “get well” basket with all the medicines and tissues and salves she needs to feel better. I know, I know, you said everyone is better, but let’s face it, she’ll be sick again spending time with her beautiful granddaughters. The risk of sickness is worth it, so let’s just concentrate on mitigating the results.
Grammy needs to be taken out for a nice brunch and then to the spa!
My 3 year old’s name is Garlow! We have her make a thank you card whenever someone does something for her. She takes this job very seriously! I would also include gift certificates for a spa day.
I think Harlow should make her something nice like a picture of the two of them together. Also, she totally deserves a spa weekend with loads of pampering & relaxing massages.
I totally forgot the name of it (I should look for your post…) but the dinner delivery service would be a great treat for her. Glad Harlow is feeling better and good thing Mazzy didn’t get sick too. My kids were sick last week one after the other. All good now! I should get myself the dinner service too! π
You could get a nice pot and Harlow could plant her some nice flowers. Grandmas tend to have everything already but plants are always a good extra.
I think you should pamper her with a spa day package!
Normally I would suggest a spa day or gift certificate for a Mani and Pedi but it looks like Granmy really enjoys spending time with the girls and giving them treats so I would treat Grammy to a fun activity that she could do with them perhaps a nice tea at Alices’s Tea Cup or Lunch and Dessert at Serendipty.
Wow. Lots of great ideas already. I was thinking that since Grammy0 missed out on some good Harlow time while being sick, perhaps you could treat the two of them to some special event together, when they are both feeling all better. Maybe a day at the zoo, or whatever suits their interests best.
I was trying to think of something you could get for Grammy, but WOW, that’s some sort of life debt, right there. π I would start with some chocolates and a pony and a short tropical vacation and maybe a Lexus with one of those giant bows. Then I’d just sort of work my way up from there.
An Anthropologie candle! Not just the reg. sized one but the massive Mercury glass one. That and a s’well water bottle! Two things you probably wouldn’t buy yourself.
Grammy deserves a massage! And maybe some champagne!
Get her some nice tea and a new tumbler!
You should buy her a glassybaby! My friends got me hooked on these gorgeous things. So many colors and meanings…it’s a special treat for sure
A spa day or massage sounds like a great way to treat Grammy for all she did!
This happened exactly to my husband and me last year! We were in Hawaii for our anniversary, eating our last dinner before heading to the airport when I checked with my parents to see how our boys were doing. My oldest son had a severe case of the stomach flu, both vomiting and diarrhea. My younger son was just showing symptoms, as was my Mom.
Appropriate gifts were already purchased, but we did get my parents gift cards out to dinner and movie as an extra thank you, especially for getting sick while taking care of my sick kids. It’s funny, my husband and I were just in Park City the weekend before you got there!
Something special for Grammy…spa gift card, this way she can pick out her own treats! And you should go with her! A nice mom/daughter day for you two π
I think you should give Grammy a spa day! π Massage, facial or mani/pedi would be nice. Or all 3! π
