Today, I had my 20 week ultrasound. You know, the one where you have to drink a ton of water, refrain from using the bathroom, and then lay patiently for an hour, while a technician presses, pokes and jiggles a large vibrator-looking thing across your bladder?
I think I peed the world's sixth ocean when it was over.
The 20 week ultrasound hopefully delivers much positive news— that your baby has two arms and legs, doesn't have a third eye hovering directly above it's nose, and is the correct weight for it's gestation.
Mine has all limbs accounted for and weighs in at 14 oz., which is totally within normal range, but in no way accounts for the 13 lbs. I've gained thus far.
But the most suspenseful part of the whole experience, is looking for signs of a penis to pop up on the monitor.
Cue Jaws music— da-da, da-da, da-da, DA-DA-DAAAAA!!!!!
"What's that?" my husband asked excitedly.
"Either an arm or you're giving birth to the next Dirk Diggler," said the technician. (I think she just said, "it's an arm" and I imagined the rest.)
During Mazzy's 20 week ultrasound (more than two years ago), I hadn't fully admited to myself that I had a preference until that warm blue goop was unceremoniously splurted onto my stomach. Every time anything remotely resembling male genitalia would appear on the screen, my heart would sink.
That's how I knew I really wanted a girl.
Mike, of course, was having the complete opposite experience— he had always dreamed of having a son.
In fact, one of the reasons we found out the gender was because Mike didn't want his first reaction to his child to be one of disappointment. He wanted to know what was coming and prepare himself accordingly.
I understood completely.
It took him about a day to digest but by the end of it, he was thrilled to be having a girl.
And of course, we all know how well it worked out for him. Mazzy lives and breathes for her father. And I can't imagine any boy could possibly rival my daughter's devotion to the Giants.
This time around, I honestly don't have a preference.
A girl would mean that Mazzy would have a sister which is very special to me since my sister is my best friend. A girl would mean that Mazzy and the new baby could more easily share a room and perhaps we could put off buying a new place for a few more years. A girl would mean that we would save money on new clothes, new decor, and new toys (I know that sounds like one huge gender stereotype, but it's true).
A boy would mean that we would have the experience of raising both genders. A boy would mean that Mike's dream would be fulfilled and there would be no begging a few years down the line for me to consider a third kid. A boy would mean that I would get to experience the kind of love I hear only exists between a mother and her son, similar to the kind of bond a father has with his daughter.
We haven't told Mazzy that we are having a baby yet, but we have asked her if she would prefer a brother or a sister.
"A brother."
She is adament. We've asked her on many different occasions and her answer never wavers.
I then follow up with, "But what if you had a sister? Don't you think that would be fun too?"
"Yes," she says.
"What would you name her?"
"BOY!"
Well, we now have the answer, officially confirmed by the technician, unless the technician sucks at her job.
But just revealing it would be no fun.
So let's play a game…
You guess the gender of my baby in the comment section below and then I will randomly select the winner from the people who guessed correctly.
The winner will get a gender-neutral "NYC Baby" gift from my favorite little downtown children's shop— Piccolini. Prize package includes a copy of the children's book "A Walk in New York", a Metrocard rattle and a Keith Haring bib set.
Check out Piccolini's online shop for a carefully curated selection of baby books, toys and clothes, including a big emphasis on music themed baby gifts.
As always, please only enter if you are a Mommy Shorts Facebook Fan or subscriber. Or become one, just for the ocassion— that's cool, too.
Winner will be announced one week from today on Tuesday, July 9th.
Ready?
Do you think I am having a boy or a girl????
———————————–
BOY! But pls don’t enter me to win anything. I just wanted to guess 🙂
Boy! Congrats on a healthy baby!!
Girl
Boy! Boy! Boy! (Not triplets, though)
I’m going to save this post so I can read it to myself the day I’m pregnant again… I really need to see the positive sides of both genders and you stated them so well!
I’m going with boy. You wouldn’t joke about having a 3rd if you weren’t really on par with that.
Daddy will have two Giants Fans who think he is a god – another little girl.
Boy
Girl!
I’m going to guess, it’s another girl! 🙂
boy!
Girl?
Boy! xx
Sooooo going with a boy! But I’m always on Mazzy’s side.
I’m guessing boy. We’re at exactly the same stage but my stupid OB doesn’t do the anatomy scan until 24 weeks (AGONY), so I’m hoping to live vicariously through you (as my “famous pregnant friend”) until then. Congrats either way!
Boy!
Peen or vajeen? Its a GIRL!
Definitely a girl
I think a boy!
I’m totally crap at guessing baby genders, so I won’t… BUT I just want to say how ‘light’ and happy you sound. That’s great, regardless of gender. Here’s to healthy babies!
I say boy but only because my little princess is a lot like mazzy in age & attitude AND we are due w. Our second in Sept. Who is a BOY!
My guess is boy!
Boy!
Boy!
I think Mazzy’s baby intuition is right on and it’s a boy! Congratulations either way!
It’s versus its
A girl! Only because I have always wanted a girl…but three boys later, no girl. But I love my boys more than life.
Congratulations on your baby!
b to the o y
they are GREAAAAAAAAAT!!!!
Good post and welcome to my website: http://www.joyfax.com
man you are good at this hiding thing. I used my KGB training and reread the post three times to see if I can find clues and nothing!
I am guessing a girl. Just because.
And I am wishing you a happy and healthy baby.
I will guess girl, considering how tired you were the 1st trimester. But either way, you listed great reasons for having either. Congrats again!
Tinoket!
Boy!
I’m guessing it’s a boy! I have two friends having boys and good things happen in 3’s so you must be the third!
Boy!
Boy!
Boy oh boy!
Boy!
For your sake, I hope it’s a boy! Little girls love their daddies but little boys LOVE their mamas. Imagine getting one of those you’re-home-hugs!! They’re awesome.
A BOY!!! 🙂
BOY. 🙂
BOY!
Mazzy’s getting a baby brother!
I’m gonna guess girl just ’cause everyone seems to be guessing boy and this gives me better odds.
Girl!
I going to guess…Boy! Hope I’m right. I’m currently 24 weeks pregnant with our sixth child (this will be the fouth child I’ve given birth to) and this baby was NOT cooperative at our last ultrasound. Kicks the dopler, too. We are hoping for a girl as my husband and I have two boys together, three girls from other sources, but if it’s a boy then we’ll have 3 & 3. So needing some gender neutral items because I have my doubts this baby will cooperated for our second/last ultrasound next month.
My son said my daughter was a boy but he only knew of “boys” because he was my good boy. 🙂 I have heard that toddlers and children have a bit of a sixth sense of these things, but I need before we even told anyone or I was showing or having regular symptoms that it would be girl. I am curious what your instinct said as well.
So my final guess is boy, just because I think it is more fun having one of each 🙂
I have a feeling it’s a boy!
boy
BOY BOY BOY
(I can ship you all the cute, non-spit-up-stained boy stuff from this end. You get 18 or so weeks to catch up.)
OK. Since I can’t see you or feel you or view your ankles {swollen or not??} I’m going to say that you’re having a girl. Just for Mazzy’s sake 🙂
I think boy for sure.
Siblings are rarely wrong, even when they don’t know what they are talking about…so I’m going with BOY!
I have 3 boys, and since #1 became a big bro, he’s accurately guessed the gender of both his brothers, and the three cousins to come along as well.
But whatever you do, do NOT let the older sib choose the nickname! Poor Gavin was called “caw-fweee” by #2 since we announced the pregnancy. It still pops up once in a while (correctly pronounced at least!), and he’s going to be 3 in September!
I think Boy!!
Boy!!!
I am going to guess girl – can’t wait for you to tell us!
i’m gonna say it’s a girl. even though i really think it’s a boy, but less people have guessed girl which gives me a better chance at winning than if i said boy :p
I bet its another girl, though I LOVE my boy, and wish you could have one of them I still think yours is a girl.
It is a BOY!!! Everyone is having boys right now and I think it would be a lot of fun to have one of each. I have a 4 year old girl (4 tomorrow actually) and am currently 22 weeks pregnant with a … BOY.
Methinks BOY
I think you’re having a boy. 🙂
I have no guess, but totally think you make adorable girls. Can I have a “vote” instead? Incidentally, I’m never right when I do have a guess. Even with my own. Wrong all 3 times.
alright. I’m guessing girl because both of my SILs just found out they are having November girls.
So was it a boy or a girl?
Congratulations to everyone!!! I would need to see a photo of you; especially standing sideways. That is how I can tell and more often than not I am right.
