This Thursday, while everybody else is thinking about turkey and sweet potatoes and pecan pie, I will be thinking about how nobody remembers it's my birthday.
That's right, this year my birthday falls on Thanksgiving and let me just remind you that having a birthday on a holiday SUCKS. It especially sucks when your usual hostess decides to flee the country to go on an exotic vacation (Thanks, Mom!) and you have to invite yourself to your husband's cousin's house so you're not left out on the street sharing cranberry stuffing with a pigeon.
That might be a little dramatic, but you get the point.
You might also have noticed that I've been talking a lot about Mazzy's birthday lately which is on December 9th. Yep. Every year for the rest of my life, I'll be stuck planning my daughter's birthday festivities during my now irrelevant unremarkable non-event of a day.
Can I tell you how many people have called asking what Mazzy wants for her birthday? Probably about twenty. How many people have asked me what I want? That's right. NADA.
So. When Beso.com, a site that's part magazine and part online shopping mall, called to ask if I'd like to give away a $300 shopping spree and showcase a collection of my favorite items, I was all ears.
"You mean, you want me to talk about stuff that I would want? Not my daughter??"
"Well, we have kid's stuff too so you could do a Mazzy collecti—"
"No, No! I like the idea of an Ilana Collection, thanks!"
*click*
So here we are. And yes, you read that right. You have the potential to win a $300 spree on Beso as long as you sing "Happy Birthday, Mommy Shorts" the whole damn time you're shopping.
Beso has so much on their site that selecting my favorites was a little overwhelming at first. Basically you can find every brand you've ever heard of on there— from Nine West to Alexander McQueen. But then I realized the best way to shop the site is to look through the editor's collections and the top picks at the opening of each section (women, men, kid's, jewelry, home, beauty) in categories like "Back to the Basics", "Borrowing from the Boys", and "Great Looking Trash Cans". It's kind of like looking through a fashion magazine except everything is right there available for purchase. A fabulous (and dangerous!) thing.
You can "heart" your favorites to refer back to later and make "collections" to email people who might need gift ideas. Like your husband (AHEM!) Plus you can sign up for deal alerts on specific brands or categories. For instance you can say that you just want to receive notifications if Marc Jacobs is having a handbag sale. Pretty awesome, right?
Ultimately I put together a birthday collection of my favorite practical, less than practical and totally impractical items. All are perfectly acceptable birthday gifts should anybody decide they want to get me something. (Really? You shouldn't have!)
Keep in mind, I did not take price into account WHATSOEVER. It's a birthday wish list that no one will buy for me— why on earth would I create a budget?? But please know that you can find brands at every price point.
From left to right: Marc Jacobs Pretty Eliza Diaper Bag ($288), Proenza Schouler PS1 Medium Satchel ($1195), Rebecca Minkoff Beau Clutch ($250), Cole Haan Air Autumn Flat Boot ($398), Tory Burch Lawson Ankle Boots ($425), Christian Louboutin Two-Tone Pump ($675), Vince Honeycomb Turtleneck Sweater ($295), Phillip Lim Striped Wool/Silk Dress ($375), David Meister 'Cold Shoulder' Sequin Dress ($328), Tsovet Rose Gold Watch ($475), Marc By Marc Jacobs 'Jessica' Necklace ($118), Kenneth Jay Lane Coral Beetle Ring ($99)
I covet the aqua Proenza Schouler bag the most. Unsurprisingly, the most expensive item up there.
Before I get to the rules for the giveaway, you must promise me ONE THING. If you win, you are NOT ALLOWED to shop for your kid or your spouse. It's MY BIRTHDAY and I say you must spend the money on yourself.
Deal?

How completely fabulous is this? Happy almost birthday to you and I’m a fan of all of the above! xo
Happy Birthday, Ilana!! I’ll eat an extra piece of pie in celebration. And I loooove that impractical shoe up there! Best birthday present ever? My first grandchild, except that she was born 4 days after my birthday which happens to be my ex-husband her grandfather’s birthday which just infuriates me. So it’s kind of the worst present too.
I just subscribed to Mommy Shorts on YouTube. That Mazzy is one energetic little singer!
I REALLY love that aqua bag. And I’m usually so practical! Both FBs are covered. Happy Birthday! Thanksgiving is my mother’s birthday too, so I get it.
I’m a fan of both now! The best (and worst) gift I ever got was my oldest son. He was born 5 days after my birthday, and obviously he was the best gift I could’ve gotten. He started our family. But, he’s also the worst, because just like Mazzy, everyone has practically forgotten my birthday for six years now.
Look, Mom, I TRIED to go into labor earlier, OK? I’m no happier than you are about the whole sharing a birthday with grandad thing.
I’m subscribed! When will you have guests to answer questions about unmentionables. I’m really good at being inappropriate. 😉
I am already a M.S. YouTube subscriber!
Happy birthday! Let’s see. Worst birthday present…a stupid mountain bike when i turned 15 and would basically have rather died than be seen riding a stupid mountain bike. I might have been spoiled brat. But really. There was nothing in my life or personality that should have led my father to think I wouldn’t hate that mountain bike.
I’m a fan. 🙂
I’m already a YouTube subscriber.
I’m glad you put the blame where it belongs for that one. 😉
I know what you mean with the Thanksgiving birthday… my oldest daughter’s birthday is Nov 23 and every few years falls on Thanksgiving. Worst gift ever was when we first moved out of our home state (hubs was active USMC) and my mom forgot me on my birthday. Away from family and friends, in a new state, and completely forgotten. Suckfest.
I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving so November 24 for me is totally JUST YOUR BIRTHDAY!!! Woohoo!!
Sigh, what a lovely site (and sight) Beso is. I wish they’d ship to Malaysia so I can play around with $300.
Watched the show episode 2 and loved the ABC rendition (again!).
LOL!
WhilevI am not a fan of induction or unneccessary c-section, sounds like you should heve been! Haha 😉
Do they ship outsides of the States. If not, this is just for show. Best birthday gift – while in University my then boyfriend hid a (cheap, but still) necklace inside a kinderegg as knew I loved them, carefully breaking then resealing the chocolate. We then got married (well, insert a few years) and on Boxing Day he bought me a mop and diet book. (lol, is funnt to say but there was both things I had wanted). But for Christmas one year ( I know, well it’s technically a birthday even if not mine, right?) my daughter bought me a mirror at the dollarstore then attached a handwritten note ” So Mommy can always see how beautiful she is”. I am not and have self-esteem issues … not that day though!
I’m a fan of both!
My best gifts usually come from my grandmother, who is a jewlery sales person and has great fashion sence, but last Christmas she gave me three white porcelin elephants. A white elephant gift. Funny, Grandma.
Fans of both! The best birthday presents were concert tickets, both from my husband. One to see Madonna with an awesome girlfriend and another to see Pat Benetar (I love the 80’s!).
One strange birthday was my sweet sixteen – my parents and friends parents threw us a surprise paint ball party. Because every sixteen year old girl wants to be shot at on her big day. For the record my boyfriend at the time shot me in ass and it hurt like hell…he didn’t last long after that.
Also already subscribed to youtube and loved the abc’s (again!). On the bright side it doesn’t look like “uterus” in the background this time! haha!
I’m a fan of both and a subscriber. The worst birthday present I got was when my first-ever boyfriend broke up with me on my 16th birthday. I found out later that he didn’t even know it was my birthday, which made it sting all the more.
Oh wow I want to win this. I’m a fan of both and the worst birthday gift I ever received was getting trapped in my car I’m a flood on my 18th birthday, although I was the dummy who turned down a flooded side street.
Best birthday gift was a Raymond Weil watch from my mother for my 21st birthday. It makes me think of her daily.
Worst birthday gift was a weird tropical painted box that my family brought back for me from the virgin islands. I wasn’t able to go on the trip because of work and the box really rubbed that in my face!
AND I have subscribe to Mommy Short YouTube Channel!
So fan of both here. And hmmm….
I think I will say the worst birthday gift ever was my 18th. My birthday is a week before Christmas, and I was given a 1/2 gallon of Popov Vodka from my best friend. Unbeknownst to me I was also in the early stages of mono, so drinking said vodka (underage no less) was a truly awful thing to do on many, many counts.I was then horribly ill all of Christmas, New Year’s and almost did not graduate on time due to the amount of school that I missed. Is it all the fault of the vodka? Of course not, but it’s all related.

Hmm, best birthday present? Nothing really stands out in my mind. Is that horrible? My mom got me a diamond necklace one year so that should take the cake except that I don’t really wear jewelry but it’s still a very nice gift.
I’m a triple fan! Best birthday present…my husband gave me a Flip camera two years ago (he’s an awesome gift-giver). I’ve used the crap outta that thing – and often spend entirely too much time watching the videos on the computer. My babies have just grown too fast. Happy birthday, Ilana!
Happy Birthday to your awesome self!! You share a birthday with my oldest – he’ll be 12 this year. We try to make sure he doesn’t get overlooked, we give him the choice every year of how he wants to do his birthday and T-day. This year, my mom was finally able to travel down, so he went with traditional dinner, and pumpkin cheesecake as his cake, then taking everyone to go see The Muppets 😉 ….
My worst birthday was 5 years ago. My bday is June 17, which often falls on Father’s Day, and my hubby and I had gotten married on my bday. 5 years ago, all 3 events were the same day. My dad was in the hospital, having suffered a major heart attack, and I spent the day snowed under paperwork for him. Thankfully he survived. Altho, ironically, he’s hospitalized *right now* for the same thing. *eyeroll*
Also, I just subscribed … the videos are awesomness personified!!! xo (and happy birthdaygiving!!)
I am now Facebook fans of both pages. The worst gift I ever received was probably this huge gold flower earrings my father bought for me in high school – they were hideous, but I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, so I had to wear them a few times. Ugh – hard to do as a self conscious high school girl!
Already a clear mommyshorts fan now beso too! Am I eligible to enter? There would be nothing I’d rather be doing then celebrating your Thanksgiving birthday with you! (and let’s be honest everyone has to invite themselves) We always make sure there is cake and presents ;-). Let’s see worst birthday gift: having to celebrate Robyn’s 40th on the day of my actual 20th birthday. (everyone forgot it was my bday too) January bday’s suck just as much in this family as the november/ december crunch too. What would you like for your birthday?
And already a subscriber on You Tube!
Hmmm, first post didn’t work…
Fan of both sites!
Best birthday gift was the surprise party my husband threw for my 30th. And the brown boots I had been salivating over for months!
Fan of both 🙂 As for worst present ever – socks. boring old plain white socks. from my grandfather. when i was 7!!! w.t.f?!?! (i sent a thank you note anyways… was the only one of my siblings to do so that year – my sibs got the same thing on their birthdays – and was the only one to get a present at all the next year! HA!)
Happy Birthday! My daughter’s birthday is three weeks after mine and even though I was still pregnant this year on my birthday, I still got shafted.
The worst present I ever got was the year I got shower gel and other girly smell-good stuff from EVERYBODY. In retrospect, maybe I should’ve been offended if they all thought I stank.
And I’m now a subscriber on YouTube 🙂
By the way, you wrote “whch is on Decmeber 9th”. I know it’s hard to write when your eyes are filled with tears, but maybe you want to fix that.
I’m not really surprised that my favorite is the Proenza Schouler bag, too. I always seem to fall in love with the most expensive things. Maybe it’s for the best that this contest is only open for US residents and that I don’t qualify for that or else I’d be tempted to pay the other 900$ for the bag if I won.
And love your video page!!! Subscribed as soon as you debuted.
Best gift ever: My OB decided NOT to induce my first baby ON MY BIRTHDAY. That was his plan. I told him to shove it. My boy came 10 days later <3. He was an okay late gift too.
Bottle of Head and Shoulders and a calendar, from the previous year. They both came from students in my class. Apparently I had an issue with time and dry scalp?
For my “sweet 16” I got to have a graduation party for my sister. I didn’t get a single present. My entire extended family was at my house, and never even said “happy birthday” to me. It wasnt until 2 days later that my parents even realized that they had missed it. My dad then gave me a can of cashews, which he had bought at the grocery store with me a few days before……they are his favorite, and he ate most of them.
$300 to buy stuff that I would normally look over because it would not be practical to buy myself something that fabulous? sign me up!
the worst birthday gift I ever got was an afrodisiac gift basket (chocolate, massage oil, oysters etc) and a breast milk pump. both would have been fabulous if the gift wasn’t from my mother in law (creepy), we were not even trying to get pregnant and I am allergic to shellfish! She either really wanted a grandchild or she secretly wants to kill me.
Happy Birthday (my sister-in law’s falls on Thanksgiving a lot too!)
My worst present- A GARBAGE CAN from my husband. Granted, we needed a new one and this was stainless steel fancy model, I was sort of taken aback. I figured there would be something more inside it-there was, garbage bags. All day I waited for something more (I know, it sounds selfish) but nothing. That was my 28th birthday present. I’m all for practical gifts, but that one was too much!
Like mommyshorts and Beso on FB.
The worst birthday present I have received was a visit from my mom who brought by a pack of gluten free crackers (which were delicious btw) and a huge chunk of triple cream brie. The brie DID NOT agree with my stomach and I was on the toilet for the second half of my birthday. Thanks Mom!
Love the youtube channel. I was one of the first few subscribers.
Great videos! I look forward to episode #3!
My son’s birthday is January 2nd, forever to fade into oblivion like yours. I got lucky and my daughter came early, first one in the family to ever be born before their due date. We figured with the date they gave us, that she would end up on my birthday. Phew, got lucky, especially since I’ve shared my birthday with my sister (4 years younger) most of my life! So, I totally get the birthday debacle-ness, and you should pick me! 🙂
Happy Birthday, Ilana!
I got a KitchenAid stand mixer last year for my birthday psyched about that. Which makes me sound old. I can’t really remember any birthdays beyond that. Which makes me feel old.
I also just subscribed to your YouTube channel. Been meaning to do that…
Specifically, my last birthday my husband refused to get up with the baby and let me sleep late then he didn’t say happy birthday to me all day. We had to go out of town for a wedding I was excited about and when we got to Indianapolis he sulked the entire time and when I told him I couldn’t believe it was my birthday and he was being such an ass he said it is just your birthday what is the big deal it is just another day then followed it up with you don’t see me making such a big deal about my birthday.
We moved—That’s right it was my birthday, my husband had already left town for the new job, and the movers took all my furniture away on my Birthday. Leaving me with a 4 yr old a 1 yr old and my mom to drive all the way from PA to WI……Yeah um Happy Times!
One of the best birthday presents I ever got was when my mom gave me a book of our family recipes. It was so special because it included the original, handwritten recipe cards from both my deceased grandmothers.
The cheesy “best present” answer would be my son who was born 3 days before my birthday. So I feel your pain on my birthday now being a non-event!!!!!
for my birthday two years ago, my loving husband bought me a big box of tampons. Not just big but the ones from bj’s. He was so proud of himself for buying the right brand and for being so practical.
I got a skirt that was way too big and matronly (I was in my early 20’s at the time). My dad and brother suggested I get a belt and “cinch it!” and then proceeded to reenact the Gap Girls skit from Saturday Night Live.
I am fans of you and Beso on FB.
P.S. My birthday is July 4 so I have to put up with people saying “We’re celebrating with you!” or “Do you pretend all the festivities are for you?” and then they don’t give me any gifts.
I “like” both pages (Becky Mapes Jahnke)
The best gift I ever got, was the year my husband bought me a new car! I was so shocked, I couldn’t believe he had done that, especially since I had no idea if we could afford it!! Of course, every year since he has let me know that I had that one really good birthday! LOL I feel your pain with the birthday on a holiday thing, often my birthday falls on Easter, so it is forgotten!
I hope you have a very Happy Birthday!! 🙂
Happy Birthday, I hope that your day is awesome and that the people who matter the most will make it a great day for you!
Best: My daughter and son, 6 days before and 1 day before mine.
Worst: recovering from a c-section on my birthday and having people visit the baby and bring me NOTHING, not even a freaking birthday card to acknowledge that I exist. Or the fact that some OB just shoved her very delicate hands INTO my entire uterus and YANKED out a 9lbs baby. NOTHING for that either, both times. And just in case you are wondering, that includes the husband who got me pregnant to begin with.
Oh and since I am on a roll with the pitty party, I won’t get anything for Christmas this year either, like the two previous years. WAHWAHWAHWAHWAH
I love having an experience as opposed to someone buying me an actual gift (this doesn’t mean I wouldn’t buy MYSELF something nice) so every year my mom takes me to see a play in the city because she knows how much I love them. As for the worst… well, my husband doesn’t really buy into the idea of an “experience” so every single year for every single holiday he buys me some sort of gadget. I can’t say they are BAD exactly, but I specifically ask him to TAKE me somewhere instead and he just tells me its a waste of money and buys me a new gadget. Every. Single. Time.
I subscribe to your you tube channel
I got a Seiko clock a la http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Melodies-Special-Collectors-Swarovski/dp/B001NV3M9G. Completely unsolicited btw.
a fan of both pages
I’m not eligible as I don’t live in the US, but did want to share both my worst and best birthday gifts. The BEST gift was the year my baby was born (5 days before my birthday… which sadly means my birthday is not on the radar anymore). The WORSE gift was the year of my wedding… My birthday was a month before our wedding and my husband totally forgot about my birthday and bought me nothing, not even a card! To “make up” for forgetting, the day after my birthday he bought a cake… which was moldy and only discovered once I cut into it! Ultimately, he left a blank cheque on the bed for me to buy “whatever I wanted”.
Oops. I didn’t realize and I commented as I went through. I am a follower of the youtube blog. Mazzy’s ABCs are awesome!
I am a fan of both of you.
Worst gift EVER: Blown glass ornament of Abraham Lincoln’s head. Beat that.
I would love to spend money on me. =)
Worst birthday gift? A fish from my husband that died the next day.
Worst gift ever….. when I was 15 and looking at my birth certificate and realized that my family forgot the real day of my birth and we had been celebrating it wrong for YEARS!
A very Happy Birthday! The best (belated) birthday gift I ever got is my son! He was born shortly after my birthday! I’m a fan of both!
I am a fan of both. a couple couple of days before my 21st birthday, my sister won tickets to see Prince (or the artist formerly known as or whatever he was called then) and invited me to go. Thee problem: I was living in Las Vegas and the concert was in Salt Lake City, about 7 hours away and my (then) boyfriend (and now husband) had already made plans to celebrate friends. After some quick maneuverin of work schedules, we celebrated my birthday with dinner and the headed out to a bar until about 1 in Vegas, headed home to sober up and then while my husband drove us straight though to my parents house to met my sister in time to leave for the concert. He waited for to get back and then drove straight though the night to get us back home to Vegas for work the next day. It wasn’t an expensive gift but it was wonderful to see that he would do so much to make me happy!
I subscribed on Youtube (littlestinkerlogan) I enjoyed the video!
My son’s birthday is Thanksgiving this year, too!!! so happy birthday to you and to him. He was two the first time his birthday was on Thanksgiving and all the cousins dressed up in costumes and came over after thanksgiving dinner to have his party. This year, he is 19, he is cooking the dinner, and requested my mom’s famous angel food cake for his birthday.
Already a fan of your page & just became one of Beso – my Dh thanks you for enabling my shopping addiction 🙂
Worst birthday present ever…um a ShopVac – no lie a bright red, stinkin shop vac. At the time I told my in-laws (in passing) that it would be nice to have one to help with the mess my dogs made (this was pre-baby). I never thought they would actually get it or that DH would think it would make me happy. Today it sits in the garage…I haven’t touched it.
2nd worst birthday present (this year) – my sweet (now) 18 month old decided that was the day to take a poop on the floor before bath time. Guess who got to clean that up…did I mention I was 4 months preggo (now 6 mos) with horrible nausea. DH was conveniently feeding the dogs ;).
Haha. The worst part is I was INDUCED on that day! They gave me no choice. I seriously begged for another day and that was the only one open. LOL.
Worst birthday gift ever: hubby went to work early, I woke up to find a USED paper plate on the counter with HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WE ARE OUT OF TOILET PAPER scrawled on it.
For real.
Oh! And leaving my second comment to say I am subscribed to the You Tube channel : ) and a fan of both Facebook pages. Happy Birthday!
I hope you enjoy lots and lots of cake today!!!! And don’t worry–it’s calorie-free on your birthday! 😉
Happy Birthday!!!
I am a fan of both!
Best birthday present ever was my husband getting me a digital camera to replace one that I lost a week before.
There were no “worst” gifts. Seems like everything I received over the years had a lovely memory attached to it.
And I just sang Happy Birthday while subscribing to your youtube channel 🙂
(I mean on Thursday!) 🙂
First, Happy Birthday!!! I hope you are surprised and your birthday is remembered by many. My best birthday gift was my son, who was born the day before my 25th birthday. Though in a way, he was also my worst becasue my birthday disappeared from that point on 😀
damn it–can you delete these comments??? all 3. I’ll leave a revised one later 🙂 lol just one. i promise! ha!
So have a Happy Birthday on Thursday!!!! 🙂 With LOTS of cake, of course!
Hopefully you won’t get a “Marriage for Dummies” book for your birthday…I got a “Dating for Dummies” book after beginning dating my now husband….lovely.
The worst gift I’ve gotten was a broken vase that had a dollar store tag on it. I was totally let down when I had gotten, home b/c it was from a close family member!
I am a fan of both on facebook (angela akinniyi)
Happy Birthday!!
My son was due Feb. 4, he came Jan. 13, 13 minutes before midnight. My birthday is Jan. 14. Bye bye birthday! I remember being mad because he came that early so I couldn’t go out to dinner for my birthday, I was stuck in the hospital! Having no money it was something we did only twice a year, once for mine, once for hubby’s and I really looked forward to it. Little did I know he would usurp my birthday for…ever!!
My grandson was born the day before our anniversary. Bye bye anniversary….
Kids! So selfish!!
Fan of both- LOVE the Beso! Hubby not so excited. Hmmm… Worst birthday gift has to be when I turned 12 and my dad (the never around, absentee type) gave me a Barbie at a party with my friends. And then acted hurt when I was like “WTF?!?!?!” Our already strained relationship has never recovered. Have not had very many bad birthday gifts- I send very specific lists out. 🙂
How completely sad that as a Canadian I cannot enter. Too often this is the case and it’s DEPRESSING. I do have a US mailing address…any chance that makes me a contender LOL.
That said, I DO need to share my worst gift EVER. My darling husband, over-hearing me mention that we needed a new garbage can, thought buying a large stainless steel can FOR MY EFFIN BIRTHDAY was a smart move.
Not so much.
Also, love video #2- seriously need hair tips! I felt like a magpie staring at it and thinking “SHINY”. Am subscribed and the email this morning made my day! Happy Birthday Thursday and enjoy stuffing your face- do it double time because it’s your birthday & Thanksgiving!
I am a fan! Happy Birthday!
I am a fan, or a “like-er” (?) of Mommyshorts and Beso on Facebook.
Happy birthday to you! My worst birthday gift? On my most recent birthday my husband gave me a card. And that was it. Come on! I need stuff, not words!
I subscribe to your YouTube channel. Your Episode 2 was hilarious!
I am a fan of you & them on FB! And, I just want to throw it out there, my favorite item was the turquoise bag, too. We have expensive tastes.
The WORST birthday gift I ever got was a “Make Your Own Jerky Kit” from a friend. Not only is that within itself pretty bad, but what makes it worse is that I’ve been a freaking vegetarian for over 10 years.
The best birthday gift I ever received was a emerald and diamond heart necklace from my husband.
I like both Mommy Shorts and Beso on Facebook.
My best ever birthday gift was a gorgeous Coach handbag. I am a fan of Mommy Shorts and Beso on Facebook.
I am subscribed on you tube (delliedel1)
I subscribed to your YouTube channel – [donnadj22]
Worst gifts always come from my mother-in-law: Nothing says Happy Birthday like Christmas china rimmed in gold for the casual-dining, May birthday girl who prefers silver over gold. I am a fan of all y’all and a subscriber, too! Let the shopping begin!
I’m a fan of both on Facebook!
Best: Shoes from the husband (nice ones!!)
Worst:Socks (practical in theory but too big for me!!)
I subscribe on You Tube (I’m a big fan of that ABC video lol)
Happy Birthday Ilana! Both my mom and my eldest niece were born on Thanksgiving and my in-laws, aunt and 2 cousins all were married toward the end of November. So, Thanksgiving is always one big birthday/anniversary party for us. You should totally get your favorite dessert, alongside the pumpkin pie and when everyone says what they are thankful for, they should totally say “Ilana, obviously!”
Great giveaway!!
