Giveaway: Oreck VersaVac vacuum cleaner and steam mop ($250)
Before I had a kid, I mainly pulled out the vacuum to make sure the fibers of my carpet were all going in the same direction. I'm sure I dropped a potato chip every now and then, but that's about it.
I don't remember ever eating cereal on my couch, deciding I didn't want it, then turning the full bowl upside down to prove my point. I also don't think I ever poured myself a glass of orange juice and then hurled it across the kitchen because it wasn't apple. Or put a cracker on the carpet and then crushed it with my foot just for the hell of it.
These things are just not done by adults living on their own.
But once grown people add a toddler to their living arrangements, it's a whole other story— remember the kids up top?
I've always had a broom, a vacuum, a dust buster, a mop, a swiffer and something called a "swivel sweeper" all crammed into my tiny utility closet ready to spring into action when necessary. Cereal spilled in the kitchen— get the broom; cereal spilled on the rug— get the dustbuster; cereal and milk spilled in the kitchen— what happened to all the paper towels???; cereal and milk spilled on the rug— buy a new rug!
My utility closet is small and also contains my washer and dryer, so I usually have to take everything out to get the item I need. Attempting to get them all back in is a story that doesn't always have a happy ending…
Act I: I shove everything inside.
Act II: I close the door as quickly as possible.
Act III: Everything comes crashing down on me the next time I need to open the door.
With all this in mind, I was very excited when Oreck contacted me to do a review and giveaway of their new VersaVac— a vacuum cleaner and steam mop in one. They promised I would be able to do away with my broom, my dust bin, my mop and my bucket because the multi-tasking VersaVac can be used on all floor surfaces— including carpet, wood, tile and stone.
The VersaVac is very streamlined (as you can see above), but still has the same strong suctioning ability of a much larger vacuum. Plus, it's bagless (you just empty a removable canister and snap it back in place) which makes things even easier and is great for the environment.
It easily transitions from vacuum to steam mop by using a snap-on steam plate and filling a small removable tank with water at the sink. You can use a low setting for sealed hard wood floors and a higher setting for kitchen tile. So you can vacuum the crushed cracker out of your carpet and then two seconds later, use the same apparatus to get the sticky patches of badly cleaned-up juice off your kitchen tile. Making cleaning your home, if you feel the need to do such a thing, take much less time.
My only complaint is it doesn't have a hose attachment like my old vacuum so I would still hang on to my dustbuster to clean my crumb-filled couch.
Today, Oreck is giving away one VersaVac ($250) to one lucky reader.
Just follow the giveaway rules below and maybe the next time your child ends a crafting project by ceremoniously dumping a cup of glitter on your throw rug, you'll be excited to test out your new vacuum instead of wondering if you can trade your child in for an upgrade.

My lovely curios 4 year old wanted to figure out how far he could put the hose through the pipe on the neighbors house…. When he got it in he wanted to figure out where it was in the house…. Parents found it. It was their vent for the heater.., really could have used the steam cleaner to help clean that mess up. And the vacuum to syphone unsuspecting $$$ from people to pay for the FULL replacement of the furnace:(
It’s hard to pinpoint the worst, but I can remember very vivdly the time Anna wanted to “be like mama” and got into my brand new tub of Kiehl’s body butter and smeared it all over the bathroom and into the bedroom carpets. I mean, I guess it all smelled good, but why did she have to use the good stuff? I love that this can be used on hardwood, tile, and carpet because the odds of me ever getting all the floors clean in my house at once are very slim considering I’d have to get out like 8 different tools. An all-in-one tool makes me think (maybe delusionally) that I would have a better chance of getting it all done…
I am a fb fan. When my 9 year old was about 2 he somehow got a hold of the food coloring and got it all over the kitchen floor. Thank god he only got a little bit on the carpet. Um, ya, I was late to work that day.
My daughter loved turning her sippy cup upside down (before they were drip proof)to watch the milk run down windows, chairs, sofas and the floor. Like you on FB. chedeb5353@hotmail.com
Here are some of my favorites (note the sarcasm): 1) poop smeared into my carpeting on several occasions when my little one was about 2 and potty training, 2) dust from a rainbow of chalks ground into my carpet when they decided to drop the eraser repeatedly on the floor (I still have a pink spot), 3) almost daily the two kids cut up paper, yarn, foam, stickers, and any other art supply they can get their hands on…some days it is confetti, other days, a campfire, and so on…all days it ends up on my floor strewn from one end of the house to the other, 4) every single meal results in piles of crumbs around their chairs in the kitchen, 5) potting soil dumped on the carpet, 6) not the kids, but the cats…cat vomit, red, because what genius thinks that we need red dye in cat food?
I’ve been begging my husband for some sort of miracle tool like the VersaVac. Oh, I’d be in heaven!!
The biggest mess my daughter ever made was when she went into the pantry and dumped two almost full boxes of cereal all over the floor.

My daughter loves to rub yogurt or syrup in her hair and all over her high chair.
My favorite feature is that it’s bagless.

I love the steam mop and that it works on any floor surface and the adjustable steam. I had a day of calamity with my children, the first one dropped a jar of honey on the floor (honey all over) And the second one dropped a can of soda which sprayed everywhere. I could have used this that day
Our (one-bedroom) house consists of the following members: Mommy (me), daddy, an almost 3 year old, 18 month old twins, 4 cats, and a german shepard. Need I say more? Having one cleaning product instead of a gazillion would have made cleaning up the “Goldfish Conspiracy of 2012” a whole helluva lot easier.

Of course this isn’t open to Canadian residents. Because our kids are THE BEST BEHAVED AND CLEANEST KIDS EVER DAMMIT!
Fine, whatever. So we have messes too. I don’t care about being shunned from the giveaway. I don’t need the stupid vaccuum/mop anyway, as can just keep doing what I always do – dim the lights and drink ’til I don’t care.
I’m loving all of these mess stories! Too funny. My worst mess so far happened while I was at Target with my daughter (a few months old at the time). It wasn’t until that moment, in the checkout lane, that I learned the true definition of “projectile vomiting.” Just in case I hadn’t learned, she kindly demonstrated again in the car on the way home.
So, yeah. Two-in-one vacuum/steamer to the rescue! I’ll just take it to Target with me next time! 🙂
The biggest mess my daughter has made so far has been with those handy dandy new pouch style baby foods. Whenever she gets tired of eating it she will throw them on the floor and then proceed to stomp on them shooting a stream of chunky baby food across the room! My lovely beige carpet has wonderful orange stains all over it!
My favorite feature of it is the steam mop! I can finally clean my groody floors. The fact that it’s 1 machine instead of 2 is just pure brilliance!
Just tweeted it out for a second entry!

No kids yet… However we just got a very large puppy and have 2 cats. So far this week the dog has broken decorative cups on the carpet, tracked dirt and grass clippings in the house including in his water dish?, threw up, and shredded a baseball cap to tiny little bits an hour after I vacuumed the floor. And the cats, they make messes of their own.
I love that the vacuum is a steam cleaner. Maybe it would clean my floor better than the swiffer wet.
My daughter decided to help feed the cats, with the canister of flour. Not only was it all over her and the floor, the cat food and water bowls were full of flour. It took a broom, vacuum, and mop to clean that up.
I love that it works as a broom, vacuum, and mop…that would have made it much easier.
I am a Mommy Shorts Facebook Fan (Laura Love).
The biggest mess my child ever made was when I was feeding him peas. The door rang, and I went to answer it. When I came back, peas were absolutely everywhere, from the ceiling to the floor.
My favorite VersaVac feature is the snap-on steam plate that quickly and easily transitions the VersaVac from vacuum to steamer. How great!

I love the adjustable steam settings!

My kids only 7 months old and not into too many messes yet, mainly just spit up. My dogs however….they like to find as much mud as they can when they run outside after it rains. One time they ran in with mud all over shook all that mud/dirty water onto the floor and as soon as I got that cleaned up one of them let us know that he had eaten something that did not agree with him, if you know what I mean! Excited about the possibility of an easier clean up for the dogs and the kiddo when he gets older!!
I like fb page.
The biggest mess was poop spread on the carpet from a diaper. I like the canister cup feature.
I’m a Facebook fan!!
My kids unzipped a beanbag and those little styrofoam pebbles that stick to everything… Walls, floors, ceilings, dogs… you get the picture.
It’s hard to choose the biggest mess…I’m pretty sure it was the time my kids decided not to wait for me to start baking…Flour. Everywhere! (OK, not like the picture above, but it felt like it at the time!) I love the idea of 1 product that vaccuums and steam mops. Only 1 item in my closet? My heart sings just dreaming about it. lol
My daughter and her kids moved back in the house with us,again and i really need a new vacuum.I call them the “hogs from hell”
Well, I don’t have and kids(YET!) but I’ve been a nanny to a pair of boys for YEARS! One of the first times I was watching them, I went to use the bathroom, came out and one of them got into the flour and had a flour fight!! And it wasn’t even my house!!! So yeah, I earned my money that night while I cleaned for HOURS.
I do have a VERY messy cat(she’s 14 and on the verge of death, counting the days) so this pet mommy need a vacuum!!

My children (6 & 8) are Evil Geniuses when it comes to disastrous messes. The average toddler has NOTHING on my kids, they are old enough to know better yet enjoy plotting on my slow demise. I still use a bucket and mop to clean the kitchen floor which also means the upstairs bathroom floor almost never gets cleaned. With the VersaVac I PROMISE to clean it more because lets face the facts: I’m not dragging the bucket and mop upstairs and mopping the kitchen floor 3x a day is getting old.
Favorite Kid Disaster: Children decapitate and disembowel a large stuffed animal and proceed to toss its foam insides all over their room. (blame on dog) 3 hours later when I finally (by hand) get most of the pieces off the carpet…. 5 yr old daughter takes bag outside and dumps it on the lawn…….. (again, blame on dog) I left her outside and locked the door.
Cat litter (Sandboxes), exploding pullups, and juice spills, oh my
I don’t like to admit this because I feel like it makes me look like a bad mom. I was getting ready for work and my daughter ready for daycare. My dog was crying to go outside. I quickly put on my work clothes and then let the dog out, while my daughter was watching T.V. I was outside with the dog for maybe 45 seconds while the dog peed. When I came back in, to my surprise, my daughter had picked up dog poop (the dog must have pooped while I got dressed) and colored the wall with it. Needless to say, I gagged and cried, made my dog feel horrible, stuck my daughter in the tub and washed her with every form of soap and sterilizer I could find, and then spent 20 minutes scrubbing dog poop off the wall in the kitchen.
Just about every time I mop the floor we have a juice incident, our greatest mess would have to be the infamous cast poop incident.
My son broke his leg just after we started potty training. I had him in training pants and he told us he had to go potty, unbeknownst to us he already went. My sister took him to the bathroom and pulled down his pants without looking and proceeded to fling poop all over the bathroom, herself, my son and I got some too. He had poop all over his cast and his good foot. By the end of it there were adult and kid poop foot prints all over the bathroom. It was funny, until we realized he would be in a poopy cast for 2 more weeks.
The steam feature would have been really nice here. Since it’s so lightweight we probably could sanitize the walls too.
I’m a facebook fan.
My kids dumped an entire box of apple jacks on the carpet and smashed them in. That was fun.
I’d love to have my vacuum and shark mop as one item. That has to be my favorite feature.
My sons biggest mess to date… Permanent marker on the carpet, antique cedar chest, couch, etc. while I was taking a shower. Surprisingly, I was able to get it all out/off. I love the steam clean option, as half my apartment is tile floors.
I like you on FB via Amy Zak. I don’t have kids yet, but when I do I know they’ll be super messy – I was that way as a kid! I was especially bad with rubbing food leftovers on the walls and floor. I like the on/off brushroll feature best!

I had left two sticks of butter on the counter to soften before making my Thanksgiving stuffing. My then three year old took the softened butter and smeared them all over my bathroom. Butter all over my sink, cabinet, floor and tub. I don’t think even the most high tech vacumn could have helped me out of that mess. I like the compact size of the Oreck.
Just became a FB fan too.
My kid’s closet is crammed with ALL of the same things as yours ~ except my swivel sweeper broke 🙂 The versa vac would be awesome if I could use it to replace them all!
With daily messes, it is hard to narrow down to the ‘biggest mess’ Cheerios, markers, kleenex & lotion, cleaning up after child self hair cuts, not to mention after every meal 2ith 4 kids!
But I’d say the time my bathroom got washed down with used toilet water,by a 2 year old with the toilet brush, would be one of the yuckiest 🙂
So many messes, so little time! I have 3 boys, so it’s always dirt dirt & more dirt.
1) How about the time my oldest spent his 2-hour naptime joyfully squishing the Costco-sized powder can to make his room like santa’s house? The room just happened to have an undersea puppet wall – do you know that powder doesn’t wash out of chenille puppets? You can also find it 7 years later, after 3 moves, in the joints of furniture you took apart to clean!
2) Then there’s the time I stupidly bought foaming soap hoping it would help prompt the boys to wash hands by virtue of it’s fun-factor. I never counted on the mess factor. My ENTIRE guest bath was covered, floor to ceiling, in blue, rasperry-scented bubbles, and decorated with damp toilet paper strands, accented by two toddlers doing the electric slide in the puddles on the floor. Fun times that.
I love that the Oreck will do more than one job. Space it at a premium in a small house with 3 kids, a dog, cat & big man, so the everything needs to multitask!
I forgot the worst!
3) #3 boy was a poo-painter. Yes, he was the Picasso of Poop. On the walls, in the crevices of the crib, on his stuffies, his bedding, HIMSELF and his BROTHER. This went on for MONTHS.
I actually wrote a blog post about this, but my son had explosive diarrhea and trailed it on our carpet once. Oh, that’s not all.
It happened 15 minutes before our realtor was coming to show our house to a potential buyer.
I am certain I have never cleaned a toddler, a bathroom, and shampooed carpets so quickly in my entire life.
(OH, and spoiler alert? We had just driven down the road away from our house when our realtor called to cancel. WTF.)
I subscribed via FB.
I’m not really sure what’s the best mess my 2 year old has made, but oh the crap and gunk that accumulates under her chair at the table requires a steam mop! And the cheerios and ground in miscellaneous stuff on the carpet in the living room… To have an all-in-one would be so great.
I subscriber via RSS feed.
The biggest recent mess my kids made was opening our bean bag and spilling out all its contents. The little balls were everywhere and the static didn’t help.

I also tweeted this. I know I haven’t commented much lately, but I am about to move into a house that is completely hard wood floors and I am FLIPPING OUT about how to keep them clean (I know, first world problem.) Best contest that could possibly happen right now.
I like the fact that it takes the place of several cleaning items in one compact appliance.

Biggest mess… hm.. Well, I’m sure it’s not all that impressive- but hey- they’re still little. There’s time to destroy my house yet: sidewalk chalk all over the outside paneling on the house. All over the sliding glass doors, all over the windows they could reach, and all over the posts of the cabana over the patio. I didn’t bother cleaning it. I hope it wards away the evil spirits. (already a follower)!
White carpet at mother in laws house (seriously who the heck still does that)? Baby ends poop strike. Electric yellow breast milk everywhere. Up her front, up her back, and in her armpits. Of course all over the carpet.
I am a FB fan, and I love the multisurface feature. One time my daughter wanted to make “Cake” and poured milk and flour all over our carpets!
Thanks for the chance.

I love that it is a vacuum and a mop so much easier.
My most memorable mess is when my son was 2 and had really curly hair. I mean really tight ringlets decided he wanted to make a pb&j and not wait for me. He started to climb up the cupboard and although I was probably about 60 seconds behind him I was not fast enough to keep him from spilling the 5 lb bag of sugar that was right next to the peanut butter all over himself and subsequently my floor! It was a mess and it was all caught in his hair! I think it took me an hour to bathe him and get it all out and another hour to get it all off the floor.

I am a FB fan. Back in the good ole days when my husband was my boyfriend he made some turkey and dumplings with the left over holiday turkey. He made too much and it sat and sat in his fridge…then he decided to bring it my house and give it to my two dogs. He ended up giving them food poisoning and they barfed and pooped all over my house. In. Every. Room…and the hall. The rugs, wood floor, tile floor, vinyl floor and Pergo floor were all covered in disgusting dog waste of every kind. The dogs did recover, the rugs never made it.

I love that it works on multiple surfaces! Living in an old building in Chicago we have all wood floors which are harder to keep clean than you would think. My daughters favorite pastime is individually grinding cheerios into the ground which have resulted in our largest messes thus far.
The biggest mess my daughter EVER made was her first attempt at a baking a cake. There was milk and flour strewn all over the kitchen / dining room. I’ve never seen anything like it.
My favourite feature of the Oreck? The 1400 watt steam mop with variable steam levels!

My kids (ages 2 and 4) can make a huge mess, as evidenced by the green glitter glue that I can’t get off of the base modeling in our dinning room. I think that the most annoying mess occurred when my daughter was modpodging weird objects with me (including an ugly ballerina sculpture). When I took a break to make dinner, my daughter (and her 2 year old brother) modpodged furry pom poms to the wooden FLOOR of our living room. I didn’t notice it until the next day because it was in a corner next to the toy pile, so it had time to fully dry. When I picked the pom poms off, the fur stuck to the floor and my husband finally got if off with a scraper and goo gone. My daughter said that is was her “colorful mushroom planet”.
The thing is, my kids are angels in comparison to the psychotic calculated messes that my brother and I came up with as kids. We liked to mess up the house before my mother held Junior Women’s League meeting in our home. I grew up in Connecticut and my mother is an immigrant from Colombia (just picture her in a suburban Junior Women’s League). One of our favorite tricks was finding all of the powder in the house (my mom always had powder puffs and all sorts of scented body powders in her bathroom) and dumping it all over the floor. My mom told us years later that she liked how it smelled when she vacuumed. Anyway, we would always carry out an attack when she went upstairs to get ready for her little house parties. One time we took all of the pots and pans out of the kitchen and lined them up in neat rows in the living room. Then we went for the china and silver. When my mom came running down the stairs to open the door and lead her guests into the living room they were greeted with our display. MY POOR MAMACITA!!!!! SHE IS SUCH A SWEET LADY!!!
One time one of out tricks backfired. We thought it would be fun to make a mess with pepper, but first we decided that it would be funny to pour it into the fan and stand in front of it – so we would have a sneezing attack (just like in a cartoon!). Instead the pepper got into our eyes and we both fell over crying.
My kids absolutely make epic level messes – but I’m really glad that they are not (yet) as twisted as my brother and I were.
So, I spilled my childhood cray-cray-ness, in an attempt to win this awesome vacuum. The steamer component is beyond exciting and I broke my Dyson last spring (whoopsie daisy). I actually use a mop sometimes and I think that it sucks..I want to be a steaming machine!!!
I tweeted a glimpse of the above ridiculousness and am a subscriber and follower on FB too. And a fan of your blog..yay!
Hello, I follow Mommy Shorts on Facebook and the biggest mess my kids made was when my daughter was in high school and her and her friend were working on a school project. I have a 2yr old son who has non verbal Autism and he has serious obsessions about making messes, i have to vaccum at least 4 to 5 times a day! He shreds dryer sheets, toilet paper, paper towels, any kind of paper or cotton and picks the fuzz off all his stuff animals, and pulls cotton out of pillows and my couch, not to mention he gets ahold of his 5yr olds brothers drinks every day and spills them all over the floor, so i have messes all day long, everyday, its this mommys way of life. I could sure use that Versa Vac! I love that it is bagless, and that it can be used on hard wood floor or carpet.I am a facebook fan and i tweeted! thanks for the contest!
My children are adults now but when my year and a half old daughter decided my 8 month old son needed a shower she dumped a whole sack of flour all over him.Needless to say that flour went everywhere in the kitchen.

Worst mess was created by daddy, not by my two year old.
He was changing her poopy diaper and when he was gonna place the unrolled poopy diaper on window sill, he accidentally dropped the (poop) ball into window AC unit grill. (You know the AC unit attached to the wall of your window and has grills for air blowing out facing up??)
Ummmm don’t ask me how I sanitized that one.
I hope this steam vacuum has option to clean out the grill and underneath the grill.
Oh I want one! And you made me giggle at the image of your pouring orange juice, sippin’ on it, then hurling it across your kitchen. Sounds like Mazzy keeps you on your toes, lol.
Biggest mess? Hmmm… just last weekend the 4 year old decided to cut all of her barbies’ hair. We’ve never had a hair-cutting incident before so it really surprised me. Then again, maybe we were due! LOL. She didn’t cut much off each one – just gave all 10 of them a slight trim. Those little hairs were everywhere. Everywhere! UGH. My favorite feature? That it can be used on hardwood and carpet – perfect for our main level. Thanks for the chance!

I was awoke one sleepy Sunday morning and was greeted by the following scene in my fully carpeted apartment: baby gate to the kitchen knocked over, nearly every pot & pan I own thrown about the living room, the fridge standing wide open, 18 eggs scattered and shattered across the living room, a once full 16 oz bag of shredded cheese lightly sprinkled around the dining room table, 3/4 gallon of milk on it’s side in the middle of the kitchen and the lid was no where to be found, 1 gallon of orange juice right side up but more than half dumped out in the guest bathroom, my entire bottle of coffee creamer dumped out in the hallway [I cried at this point], and at least 6 lbs of dry dog food piled into both the dog’s food and water dishes. The cherry on top was the brand new bottle of baby powder emptied out in her room with the black sheets and black comforter. I now have my alarm set to wake me at 6am instead of 7am on the weekends and I think I need to spring for a fridge lock just in case.
I like the versatility of the VersaVac being able to go from carpet to linoleum without having to do too much fidgeting or swapping of parts.
My daughter played with her poop after waking up one day. She had it all over her hands, on her face, legs, sides, etc. I’ll let the pictures do the talking: http://bethstecher.blogspot.com/2011/01/another-hannah-story-guess-what-it.html
