When I look back at pictures of myself from when I was little, the photos that always stand out are the school photos. Over the years, they paint such a clear timeline of my childhood. My favorite clothes, my hairstyle that year, and whether or not I knew how to pose with a genuine smile.
Harlow’s first school photo last year is one of my favorite pictures ever taken. It makes me want to bottle that little face and stick it in my purse and keep it safe there forever.
In previous years, Mazzy’s school photos always showed a big personality practically leaping off the picture.
But last year, her kindergarten photo was not great. It’s not BAD… but Mazzy is one of the most photogenic people I know, so she’s set my standards pretty high.
I don’t see the same mischievous spark I usually see in her eyes— I see someone who is trying to follow the photographer’s instructions. I’m guessing he probably yelled, “CHEESE!!!” instead of “Banana Booboobutt” like I usually do to get a real laugh from my kids.
But bad school photos are part of growing up. Everybody’s got a few clunkers.
Today, I’m launching a back-to-school photo series with Mini Babybel.
We’re giving out prizes (plus lots of cheese!) to parents who submit their kids’ professional school photos. You know, the ones where your kid is sitting sideways on a chair with a fake library background behind him, even though he is two feet away from the actual school library.
This is me in 4th grade (I think).
I want to see the good, the bad and the unexplainable. Then I’m going to take those photos and give out the mini version of Senior Yearbook Superlatives (the most likely to succeed, the best dressed, the least likely to be trusted with the class hamster, etc.) with one entry chosen at random to win a $250 gift card plus enough Mini Babybel to liven up your kid’s lunchbox.
They’ll look something like this:
Mini Babybel is 100% natural cheese which comes in seven different flavors— from classic Original to smooth Mozzarella style. Its rich and creamy taste coupled with its signature red-wax-packaging has made it a favorite choice for an easy, packable lunchbox addition or snack.
Mazzy and Harlow love opening the red wax with the pull-tab and revealing the goodness inside almost as much as they love eating the cheese itself.
I love Mini Babybel because it’s sized just-right with each serving delivering at least 4 grams of protein and 15% of your daily calcium needs – all for 70 calories or less. (See nutrition information for fat and saturated fat content.)
To enter, post your photos on the Mommy Shorts Facebook Page or hashtag #minisuperlatives on Instagram, making sure to tag and follow @mommyshorts to win. You can include your own superlative with your picture, but I’m warning you— I might choose another one for you.
Read the full rules here.
On September 3rd, I’ll post my favorites and announce the winner. Plus, I’ll announce the next school photo challenge with more prizes from Mini Babybel!
Now, I’m going to look for my old high school yearbook where I was awarded “Most Talented”. That was for singing, mind you. Sadly, my kids hate the sound of my voice and don’t let me sing anymore. I guess the opinion of my entire high school doesn’t carry much weight with a kids five and under.

Thanks for including my prom queen hopeful in your post 🙂
It’s important, when sending babybel with your child to school after after she’s been on an anti-cheese strike for awhile, to remind her thst you have to take the red wax OFF before eating.
She came home mad at me!
My kids love Babybel cheese too! And they want to open it by THEMSELVESthankyouverymuch. LOL. Another great post today, by the way. 🙂
Hahaha forgive me but I laughed so hard at the “Quit school to focus on her solo career” OMG I’m dying! LOL
Cute and funny photos! I’m excited to see Harlow’s new school pic for this year. 🙂
Neither of kids has ever taken a decent school photo, I think it’s genetic because neither have I!
my son (2) has has one school photo and i swear with the outfit i put him and they way the teacher fixed he should win most likely to become a mob boss. I will post it on the facebook page before the contest ends.
I generally think Mazzy looks like you, but in her “bad” school photo she looks exactly like Mike. I think that’s what throws it off- the face swap lol.
[…] your friends… plus you get money from the tooth fairy! What's the going rate exactly? I posted a throwback 4th grade photo of myself last week and someone said they didn't think it was 4th grade because I still had all my baby […]
