Giveaway: $500 CVS gift card and Vaseline Intensive Care prize pack
Remember a few days ago when I mentioned I was pulling Mazzy out of school Friday to take the kids on a family ski trip in Vermont?
Well. Mike and I have just checked the weather for this lovely long weekend and it looks like it will be a very pleasant ZERO degrees. Too warm for you? No worries, it will feel like NEGATIVE ELEVEN.
To give you a full picture of the temperature from Friday through Monday (the days we will be skiing), here’s a screen shot from my phone’s weather app:
Looks like we are traveling to Arendelle. It’s a shame we are leaving Tuesday morning and will miss the 18 degree heat wave! I would have packed my bathing suit!
In addition to being a fun (yet freezing) family activity, this ski trip is also part of a very exciting new collaboration with Vaseline®. They are supplying me with lots of gear for winter fun, including a snowball maker, a snowman kit and a blow-up sled that made Mazzy’s eyes practically pop out of her head. They also gave us about ten bottles of their reformulated Vaseline Intensive Care™ Advanced Repair Fragrance Free (fragrance free because that’s how I roll) to protect our skin from the inclement weather, allowing us to fully enjoy all of the great outdoor activities.
Of course, Vaseline could not have predicted how ridiculously cold it would be on our trip when we planned this partnership over a month ago, so I’ll take them not backing out as a sign they have full faith in their product.
Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair Fragrance Free is specifically formulated for people with very dry skin (i.e. myself and Mazzy), immediately hydrating and temporarily relieving the symptoms. Plus, it is clinically proven to heal very dry skin within five days. The big difference between this lotion and their older formula is this contains a specially designed blend of humectants to pull moisture into the skin and micro-droplets of 100% pure Vaseline Jelly to lock moisture in.
Sounds good. Especially when we’ll be trying to protect ourselves from dry skin and frostbite at the same time.
In addition to packing up our winter gear and our large supply of Vaseline, we’ve got snow boots, down jackets, waterproof mittens, wool hats, ear muffs, thick socks with liners, hand warmers, thermal underwear, fleece under shirts and anything else we can think of that might protect us from the bitingly miserable cold of the POLAR VORTEX.
I’m looking forward to next year when Vaseline sends my family to live in an igloo on a glacier with the Polar Bear Club to join in early morning swims in the Arctic. Won’t that be fun?
I’m kidding. I am totally looking forward to our trip. And I picked the location so I have no one to blame but myself. We could have built a snowman in Central Park and called it a day!
All next week, I’ll be blogging about the road trip (six hours!), skiing with Mike, Mazzy’s experience in ski school, making snowmen with @insta2yearold and everything else we do in mind-numbingly cold weather.
THANK GOD WE ARE PREPARED!
I’m also giving away a $500 gift card to CVS where you can purchase Vaseline products online or offline and a prize pack of featured Vaseline products to one lucky winner.

This post sponsored was sponsored by Vaseline, but all thoughts, opinions and fears of freezing are my own.
The coldest day we spent together outside was on a lake we visit in the summer. In January, they hold the Winter Games on it. The bars and restaurants around the lake all have games and ice skating and mini-hockey tournaments for the kids. Hubby and I were freezing, but had totally warm hearts watching our boys have such a blast! I tweeted about the contest from @lifewiththefrog.
Thanks!!
The Brattleboro Winter Carnival Parade! How can you say no to a parade? Even in February! thank goodness they don’t do that anymore
A few years ago, my kids were begging to go outside and play in the snow which was more ice than anything. I was so cold that I made a fire pit ran to it often to warm up. Why is it I could play in the snow all day as a kid and never get cold?

When I was a single mom, a guy I was dating took Ashlyn and I to one of those ice festivals and it was so cold out I started not feeling well but I was trying to put on my supermom face for my date. Once we got in the car something about the temperature change made me nauseous and I threw up on my daughter as I was buckling her into her carseat.

So yeah…the coldest day ever spent outside with my daughter and husband sticks out clearly in my mind. It was this thanksgiving. We live in Maine. Which is a cold as hell on any normal day. But this awesome thanksgiving there was a huge storm and all of the power went out. Temp dropped to 45 in our house which is always awesome with a toddler. She was also potty training so she kept demanding to use the toilet that we couldn’t actually flush. We tried to keep busy during the day (it’s thanksgiving and everyone is closed…no where to go to keep warm and busy) so we decided to go play at the playground. Dumbest parents ever. It was freezing. We ended up just driving around for like 2 hours to get warm listening to the Frozen soundtrack over and over because obviously Elsa did all of this to us is what our toddler demanded. She wanted us to go to the north mountain. We instead went to bugaboo creak because they have a mountain on their sign and they were one of the only places open. Close enough for her because they have a really sparkly drink called the northern lights. After eating we went home to bundle in blankets and all sleep together. First we tried to play a game of memory by candle light (frozen version of course) but about two pairs in the cat jumped on the table and lit his tail on fire. I blew it out quickly and he was fine. But then the house smelled like burnt hair. Which is nasty. It was another 14 hours of this comedy(tragedy) before the power came back on. Worst day ever in the cold. Inside and out.
When my oldest was about seven months we lived in Alaska. It was about… well I don’t remember how cold it was but it hurt my face. We got our winter gear on and bundled the tiny one up as much as humanly possible and put her in an ll bean sled and went Ice skating on our local lake pulling her behind us. We didn’t stay out for very long but she was lulled right to sleep. The ice was bumpy so I bet it felt very soothing to her. Lol.
Our coldest day with the kids was when we were sledding at their Grandma and Pappy’s cabin two years ago. The kids would still be sledding that hill if I wouldn’t have dragged them in with the promise of hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls.

We live in Texas so our idea of “cold” might be a regular day for a picnic for you New Yorkers; nevertheless, we do have a few weeks of cold weather and “snow days” where kids don’t go to school mostly because black ice, and that white stuff coming down is foreign to Texans and we do not know how to drive in it. A coule of years ago we had a really cold December where we went outside to play in the snow, only to realize the snow was a nice block of solid ice. So much for our snowman
Last year when it snowed for the first time in ages, my son and I played in the snow and had tons of fun. We did not stay long because he does not like the cold that much, but we did have fun!
Being a lifelong resident of Cajun country, the coldest day we ever had when my kids were young was when it dropped to 15 and there was ice everywhere. They’d never seen ice in nature and had fun breaking it off of the deck railings and tall stands of bamboo in the yard.
I am following you both on twitter and tweeted – https://twitter.com/rusthawk/status/567057572390514690
The coldest day with my kids was when we went snowmobiling last winter. It was the best weekend we have ever had as a family, and were planning on making it a yearly trip. That was until I had a baby this past December. Also, we live in Washington state. You know the one place in the whole country that didn’t see the need to get snow this year. Even in the mountains. So we are skipping the trip this year and will pick it back up next year. It’ll be fun to see how the baby does with snow.
Try using wikki stix for car trips. Absolutely entertaining, creative, and does not leave ANY mess. My girls loved them.
It was Christmas 2013. It snowed and we live in Texas so that was a big deal! We played outside for as long as we could stand. Came in warmed up, drank hot chocolate and did it all over again!
Followed Vasoline and you on twitter and tweeted about it as well!
We took our 2 kids ( 2.5 and 4.5) ice skating this past weekend in Buffalo NY. It was so cold and definitely didn’t last too long but it was fun and memories to last a lifetime.
The longest we’ve taken as a family is to St. Louis. It’s about 2 1/2 hours from our house. We went when our son was 2. We went to the science center with some friends. He slept almost the whole way there. He does really well in the car on trips…so far. He’s almost 4, but we’ve never been on a vacation farther than that yet. We are considering a 5 hour trip this spring. If we do, I’ll be sure to let you all know how it went. I’ve probably just jinxed myself btw.
We have gone sledding outside when it’s pretty cold out. It never lasts long.
My kiddos are 3 and 9 mo, so we don’t spend a ton of time outside if it is too cold. But every October we go to the pumpkin farm and we picked a day in early October and woke up to snow flurries. It was freezing and sleet/raining. Awful. We spent the entire time taking turns between the heated eating area with the then 5 mo old and going outside with the 3 year old taking pictures really quick and running back inside. But the apple cider donuts really cheered everyone up.
My son is not quite 2 and until a few weeks ago, HATED the snow. He recently changed his tune. My coldest day spent outside with him was was when he “helped” me shovel the driveway with his sand bucket and shovel.
I honestly don’t remember the coldest day I’ve been outside with my kids, becuase I really don’t do outside in tjw frigid cold. This weekend the temp hovered around 5 degrees or less (plus windchill). We watched a lot of movies!

we spend coldest days walking just couple blocks to breathe some fresh air
Coldest day was an ice skating trip. Of course, it was spur of the moment and each parent thought the other packed the essential items. Hence, one child had one glove and the other had no snow hat. mom had no scarf since I had to give it to the one with no hat. in the end, hot chocolate and a warm cafe saved the day.
We haven’t had an exceedingly cold day in 2 years thanks to the jet stream that gives the East Coast those arctic winters. My tomato plants are still alive from last year because of the lack of cold. We were going to visit Tahoe this year, but there’s no snow there… even at the summit. I think the coldest day was one we spent in San Francisco last spring…

It was 2010 in feb. We live in pittsburgh and own a coffee shop there. We lost power at home and didn’t want the dog to freeze so we walked 3 miles in 3 feet of snow with the dog and stayed the night in our coffee shop on air mattresses.
I don’t have a cold story because we hibernate! I despise the cold and my kids have eczema so winter is the devil for us!
I tweeted and I subscribe!
My son wanted to play in the snow for his birthday. It was about -20 with the windchill. He was bundled up and sweating when we came in the house. I could not feel my toes for 4 hours.

Two years ago I decided that I wanted to take the kids to the Columbus Zoo to see the Christmas lights. We drove 2 1/2 hrs through an almost blizzard and then the kids complained the entire time. The wanted hot chocolate. They wanted to go inside. They wanted to go home. I wanted to yell shut up and enjoy our family time! Of course when I planned the trip it was supposed to be in the high 20s but I think it ended up being in the single digits. Once we got in the car to go home I looked at their bright red cheeks and drippy noses and felt like the worst mom ever. They totally didn’t enjoy all of the lights and animals because they were too cold. Other than the whining, I had a blast!!

Thought it would be a good idea to go to the zoo in the winter – wouldn’t be crowded. We bundled up so no one was cold and that part was fine, but there were no animals out. They were smarter than us!
My parents took us to Niagara Falls… In February! It was freezing and miserable and needless to say my 10 year old self and my 7 year old sister were not impressed, probably because our souls were frozen!!!
Ice fishing this year…. followed by the car getting stuck in the snow and spending hours with my teenager digging it out! Thankfully the little ones were at home that day! When we got home we all passed out by the fire from exhaustion!
