The submissions for the Picky Eaters Club have been pouring in, so much so that we might have to open several different chapters.
There will be the “French Fries are a Vegetable” chapter, the “No Crusts” chapter and the “Cheese is Only Acceptable on Pizza” chapter, which will be the LARGEST chapter by far.
There will also be a chapter for older kids who continue their picky eating shenanigans well past toddlerhood with even more annoying specifics, due to an increasingly better vocabulary.
One mom reports that her nine-year-old son “starts asking what’s for dinner at around 4:30pm so he can plan out his argument against eating it way ahead of time”.
Uh-oh. That sounds scary.
Let’s hope the picky eating issues of these 35 new inductees disappear well before they start law school…
The Picky Eaters Club is not just about support, it is also about survival. That’s why I am giving two more randomly-selected members $100 worth of products from Ella’s Kitchen®.
Ella’s Kitchen® is most well known for their pouches but also makes finger foods, toddler meals and now nutritional supplement drinks— Organic Coconut Water Electrolyte* Drinks and Coconut + Milk Nutritional Shakes. Both great ways for picky eaters to get some of the nutrients they’ve been missing out on when they reject all those healthy veggies.
The winners are…
Congratulations, Zoey and Jack! Please email ilana@mommyshorts.com to claim your prize.
Even though the prizes have all been handed out, I’d love to make this series a regular thing. If you’d still like your child to be inducted, post his/her picture on the Mommy Shorts Facebook page (or on instagram hashtagging #pickyeatersclub and tagging @mommyshorts) with their first name and specific food hang-up in the caption.
Ella’s Kitchen’s nutritional supplement drinks are sold exclusively at Target in partnership with their “Made to Matter” program.
Ella’s Kitchen® Organic Coconut water Electrolyte* Drinks (in Pear + Berry and Banana + Ginger) are rehydration drinks made with organic coconut water, fruits and veggies with naturally occurring electrolytes to help replenish lost nutrients.
Ella’s Kitchen Organic Coconut + Milk Nutritional Shakes (in Broccoli + Plum and Banana + Apricot) are a daily nutritional shake made with organic Grade A milk, fruit, veggies and coconut water to help little ones grow bigger and stronger.

This post was sponsored by Ella’s Kitchen but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’m 34 and still have a separate stomach for desserts :).
me too! and i justify it since my husband has a second stomach for beer.
No, Elena’s right. That’s a real thing.
Ha! Agreed. When I was a kid, I would tell my mom that there was only one space left in my stomach, and it was pie-shaped (or whatever the dessert was that night), not broccoli-shaped. I think at some point I actually believed food fit in there like puzzle pieces.
My 4.5 year old daughter does this exact thing to me. Pulls up her shirt to show the specific spots left in her stomach.
I always said I had a separate stomach for dessert. Now I just say that there is always room for dessert, especially ice cream.
I hear ya, kid. My favorite vegetable is salsa, too.
Fresh salsa is the only way my kids will eat tomatoes, onions, and peppers! (and the yummiest, IMO!)
I could go for some Dragon Meat now. Maybe we’ll order out tonight. 🙂
I laughed the hardest at the 19yr old, lol. These are awesome!
I mean, quite obviously, the last entry is the clear winner.
Love the 19yo!! We have 4 grown children and sons/daughter-in-laws and grandchildren … and holiday meals get more and more difficult to plan a menu with all the picky eaters!! 🙂
These are all so funny—but Caleb with the butter was my favorite. My string bean 11 year old son is the same way. We started calling him Tavin after we saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV9lC0u24Ik
BUTTER.
omg. Colin.
My husband is a 43-yr old first-generation Italian American. He will only eat red sauce if the sauce has no discernible tomatoes in it.
When my husband was a kid, he insisted his mother put the peanut butter on the left piece of bread and the jelly on the right. Sure it was going to get smashed together anyway, and the sandwich could be flipped to have either peanut butter or jelly on the top, BUT STILL.
Any of our kids’ eating quirks are obviously his fault.
I actually do this myself at the age of 24. It’s called a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, not a jelly and peanut butter sandwich! But if I want to use the same knife, I have to put the jelly on first on the right piece, then rinse it off and put the PB on the left piece. And they have to be put together just like they were in the loaf – if one of them gets flipped around, it’s all over! 🙂
As funny as this is, some of these kids (the ones who are at least 2) need to go hungry a few meals. My kids were picky eaters too, but they learned quickly not to expect me to do 1/2 the crap these kids do. Eat it or don’t, you will be hungry enough soon enough to eat, at least some of what I made.
Except peas. I’ve never seen a child eat food with peas mixed in and then spit the peas out, untouched. He will, however, eat asparagus, broccoli, spinach, and brussel sprouts. So I give him a pass on the peas.
OR you will wind up with a 19 year old who will only eat fettuccine. Or like my sisters 18 year old son, who will only eat pizza (frozen red baron pepperoni) KRAFT mac & cheese, blue berry gogert, bananas and grapes. Oh and any junk food he can find. But that list is as close to healthy as he gets.
Exactly. If you cater to extreme pickiness, you will have a teenager and often adult child with weird eating habits. I have couple of nieces who at 18 and 14 eat almost nothing but very limited and very specific junk food. Btw, the younger one still takes the breading of the chicken, and won’t touch one cooked without it. Hosting them is not something I look forward to, and they’re very nice kids otherwise. Just something to think about.
AMEN! My eyes rolled so much reading this list, I’m surprised they didn’t stay that way! There’s a wide line between pickiness and manipulation, and these parents seem to have totally missed it. My DS11 skipped this phase, or maybe I didn’t give in to his machinations when he tried. Anyway, now he eats pretty much everything. Except mushrooms. And I can’t even tell you the flak he gets (from these kids in a 5th grade form) for eating the vegetables/fruits/healthy foods in his packed lunch. Cut the puppet strings, moms!!
It frustrates me to hear “eat it or go hungry.” Think about why your kids may be picky….or just eats differently than you. Our girls are 7 and nearly 9. As infants they were so underweight we did twice weekly weight checks at the docs. At 1 the doc said, “give them whatever they will eat.” They are still under weight. The older one has a larger menu than the younger one. But it makes for easier shopping knowing exactly what they eat. There’s no eat what I make or go hungry in our house. It is not good for their brains and body.Every calorie counts for our active gymnasts. Thankfully they eat healthy foods and are mostly vegetarian by choice. No junk foods.
These are absolutely HILARIOUS!!! My kids are weird.. but this is just priceless. My kids won’t eat Lasagna unless I call it Hamburger Helper. You call it Lasagna, it’s a no go.
I have to agree worth Colin. I hate spaghetti noodles. I makeep spaghetti with shells or spirals usually. I seat they taste different!
HI MOMMYSHORTS! THE LINK TO BUY ELLA’S PRODUCTS AT TARGET DOES NOT WORK.
THANKS!
I’ll admit I’m 26 and I still don’t like the crusts on my sandwich.
I can understand the likes strawberry flavour stuff but not actual strawberries thing…………I’m the same with tomatoes (like tomato sauce, ketchup, soup etc won’t eat actual tomatoes) and it’s to do with texture. I hate the texture of them 🙂

Love this series!
I’m 29 and I have been a fussy eater my whole life. I still do not like things with a ‘mushy’ texture and therefore will eat potatoes anyway except mash. I also do not drink milk and haven’t done since I was 3 when I told my mom that ‘milk is for baby cows and I’m not a baby cow’. Finally I don’t eat any condiments and no sauces or gravy and will serve stew with a slotted spoon. And while my food can touch if we eat out in public, if I am at home I will serve the different items in individual bowls and eat everything separately.
These are hilarious! Love all of them. Love the comments too…. except for the couple Debby Downers. Come on lighten up. These are hilarious.
My spouse and I stumbled over here by a different website and thought I
should check things out. I like what I see so now i’m following you.
Look forward to exploring your web page repeatedly.
Thank you for posting this. It has given me the solace I need when I think I am going crazy with my son’s weird eating tendencies.
Some days I am so beaten down by the fight. Totally going to check out Ella’s Kitchen products next time I’m at Target.
Love these!! My son Dustyn is such a picky eater!!
I’m 35 and not really a picky eater, but at home, I will only eat my meals with the small spoon and small fork. Give me the big ones and I’ll just look at you like you have 3 heads.
Looking at these makes me glad my one year old will eat 99.9% of what I give. the .1% being mangos. please dont hate me.

I find it interesting that none of the parents with kids that will eat normal at daycare think to themselves I am the new play thing. This is insane why would anyone cater to the whims of a tiny dictator and think it’s going to produce a well rounded adult. This is the reason the newest generation is so self centered, parents think they need to give them everything they want but are missing the things kids actually need…structure, boundaries…..not an employee named mom.
Gotta tell you, if these were my kids they’d be going hungry. I have a 5-year-old and when he doesn’t eat what I pack him for lunch, I re-heat it and serve it to him for supper. If he still doesn’t eat it he goes straight to bed, as he’s obviously more tired than hungry at that point.
I can relate to the strawberry girl
I’m 21 and I will eat tomato soup, ketchup, pasta sauce, anything made from tomato, but I will NOT eat and actual tomato.
I’m almost 30 and still take the crust off my sandwich. When I was about 3 or 4 I choked on a penut butter sandwich and my babysitter thought it was the crust that caused it so she cut my crust off my sandwiches from then on. If my mom refused to cut the crust off for me I just pulled it off by hand myself and still do. Peanut butter sandwiches still make me gag but I love penut butter and apples. I am a picky eater too and always have been. If my mom made me eat something I didn’t like I would throw up.
I am 21 years old and I love all kinds of pasta except spaghetti, which I will not touch. It’s a mouth-feel thing; when I eat it, I feel like I’m eating worms. So needless to say…. I understand the 19 year old in this post.

Ha, please. Even though I find some of these funny, I can’t help but wonder how many of these children are just too spoiled.
If I’d even tried any of this with my parents, their response wouldn’t be to make something to my demands. It would be, “Ok, well, I guess you’re not eating. Don’t ask for food later”, & that would be the end of it.
