Sunday is the Oscars. The only reason I even know this is because I wrote a sponsored post for Babble about the new Oscars app.
I used to love the Oscars but that was when going to the movies was part of my regular life. Now, going to the movies is a VERY SPECIAL EVENT that only happens once or twice a year. It might as well be a trip to Paris or better yet, THE MOON, considering we have to add about $70 in babysitting money on top of the already high ticket prices.
In a past life, I made sure to see every movie before awards season. I threw Oscar parties in which I almost always won the pool. I not only got the best picture right, I got the best sound editing and the best animated short right too.
This year, I have seen a grand total of one nominated movie. Mike and I saw Argo right before I gave birth because I knew I might never see the inside of a theater again.
But I couldn't let my Oscar Pool tradition go, so here's one designed specifically for new parents.
Alright, really just for me.
For those of you who still care, voting for the Parents Magazine Blog Awards ends on Sunday. I am going to make one final plea to vote for me for "Most Likely to Make You Laugh" by clicking here. You all are my only shot at getting out of second place.
You can vote today, tomorrow and Sunday. But no matter what, come Monday, I promise I will be back to my non-begging self.
Also! If you have a baby with ridiculous hair, please post it on the Mommy Shorts Facebook Fanpage.
After my post of Harlow's epic hair yesterday, I have decided to do a HATS OFF BABY HAIRDOWN. That's code for a contest to find the funniest head of baby hair.
Even though, I'm pretty sure the funniest head of baby hair is currently trying to free herself from a Miracle Blanket directly to my right.
Have a great weekend!

I love your entries! I think I have seen remakes of them at my house.
I haven’t seen ANY of the nominated films this year either. Does really wanting to see them but not being willing to shell out the dough for a sitter count for something? Great nominees from your house!
What about best movie twist? I nominate “The one day of the week when I do not have to wake up at 5a.m. is inevitably the one day my preschooler will wake up at 5a.m. as opposed toher usual 7-7:30a.m.” Oh nevermind. Even with no other current contenders, I still lose for being way to predictable …
(these were great by the way, even though I cannot vote as have also seen, well, nothing)
If it makes you feel any better, it’s been so long since I’ve seen a movie in theaters that I can’t even remember the last movie I saw in theaters. I’m right there with you on Slumdog Millionaire..
Why aren’t you a nominee in any of those categories? Maybe a new category: “Best Supporting Actress” from your Anderson Show appearance! 😉
I’m truly impressed at your pre-kid Oscar prowess! I also only see movies once or twice a year, and they aren’t even the Oscar worthy ones. Good luck on the Parents mag award! I vote whenever you remind me to :).
Love this. And I can even tell you what’s worse that not getting out to see any of the nominated movies, and the answer is HAVING SCREENERS of ALL the nominees sitting next to your television for WEEKS and not getting to watch them. Why? Because our kids don’t go to sleep. We wake them early and put them to bed early and they just stay up until nine or ten no matter what, and we can’t start a movie in time to finish it before WE pass out because the likelihood of one of them walking into the room right as Fantine becomes a prostitute or the tsunami hits the village or terrorists, you know, EXIST, is 100%.
LOL, this is so true. Every Fri/Sat night, my husband and I will say “Hey, let’s watch a movie” until approximately 9pm at night and then it becomes “oh, forget it”. For the reasons you listed above. Glad we aren’t the only ones 🙂
I haven’t seen any of them – and I REALLY have to see Silver Linings for friend reasons and The Hobbit to honor my teenaged self. And I wanted to see Life of Pi all by myself, but it never happened. And Les Miz was a promise to my husband that was broken. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
I actually saw Les Mis because my mum made me go with her. I felt so grown up (obviously while ignoring the fact I was being taken to the movies by a parent). But then I realised my previous cinema visit was to see Cars 2 and couldn’t recall the one before that and felt slightly (lots) less sophisticated…
The last Oscar winner I saw at an actual theater (and not on Netflix seven years later) was Titanic.
I think I deserve some kind of trophy for that level of patheticness.
Also, patheticness should totally be a word.
Screw you spellcheck.
I always feel embarassed to admit the reason for not going to the movies is the added expense of the sitter! At the same time i feel bad that i dont think date night with my husband is worth it. Arghh
Glad to see some validation on the money for the sitter issue. Having some wine with my hubby once i finish writing this to even out the second one. 😉
I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both
equally educative and amusing, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head.
The problem is something which not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about.
Now i’m very happy that I found this in my search for something concerning this.
