Every working mom who continued to breastfeed after returning to the office is more than familiar with THE PUMP. We carried it to work every single day (in what was advertised as a “chic tote” but was really anything but), used it at least twice during the work day (“Gotta go! I have a meeting!”) and then prayed our bags of milk (aka liquid gold) wouldn’t burst or spill on the way home.
I remember that hideous nippleless bra that I couldn’t live without, but would want to run screaming if anyone ever caught a glimpse of me in it. At the beginning, I locked myself in my bedroom when I pumped at home because I didn’t want my husband to have the visual. But then flash forward six months later, and I was like, “I’m just going to pump right here at the kitchen counter no matter who is in the house and everyone can just DEAL.”
Still, I never got comfortable with it in the office. At the time, I was freelancing and often away on shoots, so I had to find more places to pump inconspicuously than I can count. Some more successful than not.
Here are 8 of my WORST pumping moments:
1) The time I left the pumping room with my dress tucked into the back of my pantyhose and didn’t realize my wardrobe malfunction until I had arrived back at my desk, which was two flights up and a city block away.
2) The time I had to pump in a glass office so I positioned a large piece of foam core on top of a chair to block anyone’s view and then watched in horror as it slipped further and further down the wall. I was plugged in and couldn’t move very much, so to remain out of sight, I ended up slipping further and further down too. By the end of my pumping session, I was pretty much sitting underneath the desk.
3) The time I didn’t fully close one of my bags of milk and didn’t discover this until I had gotten home from work and tried to transfer the bags to the fridge. There are few things worse than dipping your hands into a soggy bag of your own breast milk, and then realizing all that precious pumping time was WASTED. The clean up was no fun either.
4) The time I had to pump on a shoot while we were filming at someone’s house. The production assistant told me to pump in one of the bedrooms, which happened to be the bedroom of a little girl. It didn’t lock but I figured I was far enough away from where they were shooting that nobody would try to come in. I sat behind the bed, so you could only see my head if someone walked in, just to be safe. What I didn’t realize was that the occupants of the house were home. That is, until the mother opened the door and questioned what I was doing in her daughter’s room. I can’t even imagine how creepy I looked with only my head jutting up from behind her daughter’s bed. I explained and I guess she recognized the pumping noise, but it was more than a little awkward.
5) The time I had to find a place to pump at an office where there was literally nowhere to do it except the stairwell. I had a co-worker stand guard at the door but that didn’t protect me from people coming from above or below. Let’s just say, I did my business as quick as possible.
6) The time I pumped in a room that had a window which looked into another office, which appeared to be a wig maker. It was far enough away that he didn’t seem to notice me, so day after day, I used to watch him fit his clients for wigs while I pumped. Then one day, our eyes met and I made sure to pump in a different corner of the room, with my back to him after that!
7) The time I was pumping at home for Harlow while Mazzy was taking a nap. She woke up and started crying, but I was still plugged into the wall, mid-way into my pumping session. I remember yelling at her that I’d be there soon, while also being afraid that her screams would wake up Harlow. Splitting your time between two little kids is tough work and being literally attached to a wall by your nipples does not make it any easier.
And my #1 Worst Pumping Moment…
8) The time I was pumping in a gender-free bathroom and a man walked in on me. I was plugged into the wall with my pump resting on the sink, which happened to be right next to the door. The door opened directly out into reception. I can’t believe I forgot to lock it. When the guy walked in, he just stood there confused as to what he was witnessing, like he’d ever seen a woman pump in his life. I mean, I hadn’t either until I did it myself, so this is totally understandable. I tried to will him out with my eyes but when that didn’t work, I went to the slam the door shut in his face. This was thwarted for two reasons: 1) My sudden movement made my pump come crashing to the floor and 2) the door was one of those big metal pressurized doors that prevents it from slamming. I am not exaggerating when I say the whole thing literally happened in slow motion. It was mortifying. You can bet I stayed in there a good while until I thought it was safe to come out.
Despite all of these experiences, I am still grateful to my pump. And I did come to appreciate the time at work that I was able to spend focusing on my baby at home. It made me feel connected to her and like I was doing my best to be a good mom. It could also be a welcome break and a pretty damn good excuse to leave a room.
But, like most working moms who pumped, I always wished there was a better option than the bulky, noisy breast pump with the numerous parts that I carried back and forth. That’s why, when I found out about Willow, a new pump which fits into your bra (yes, your everyday bra that you already own!) with no external tubes, cords or dangling bottles to get in your way, I was intrigued. And by “intrigued,” I mean— I really wish they had invented this thing when I had babies!
Willow is quiet (read: you can use it during a conference call), simple and easy to clean (it has only two parts which are both dishwasher safe), and is completely mobile and hands-free. That means, not only can you check email while pumping, you can walk across the room to tend to your screaming toddler.
I wish I could test out the new Willow pump myself but since I can’t, I want to give one of you the opportunity to test it out for me. Leave a comment below sharing your worst pumping story or why you would love a Willow pump and I’ll randomly select one winner on March 15th!
WINNER UPDATE:
Congratulations to Georgia! Please email allie@mommyshorts.com to claim your prize!
Just promise me you’ll report back after you try it!
I have to pump in an empty office they use as storage. There’s a big cardboard cutout of an animated rat and a radio from the 80s 😂. But it has an outlet and locks! The worst was a couple weeks ago when I couldn’t even pump. I was teaching in an industrial warehouse garage during a storm. Very limited plugs that were all being used and zero in a private space. 😞
Here’s my horror pumping story:
I was pumping on the way to work (yes, while driving). I was pretty early so I decided to grab breakfast at a drive thru. For whatever reason (ahem, mommy brain) I forgot to cover myself up. I pulled up to the window and the guy says, “that’ll be 5 dol…” And then notices milk bottles hanging from my nipple-less bra. I grabbed my nursing cover and handed him my money but he was too emabarrased to look at me lol. Needless to say, that was the last time I pumped while driving.
Baby #2 is due this coming October and I’d love to try this miracle cordless pump!!
Definitely when the janitor walked in on me pumping in my classroom. He was mortified and I was over it. I pumped for a year with my first. Ugh.
I teach high school life skills, meaning all of my students have a moderate/severe intellectual disability; my students function anywhere from preK-2nd grade. In my classroom, I have a washroom that locks (or so I was told). So one day I’m pumping like a normally do and I ALWAYS lock the door. Well, surprise!, in walks 2 students, a boy and girl. They were told to change out the laundry and walked right in even though I locked the door. Turns out, the lock is broken. I then had to explain to these two kids what I was doing because they were so confused and had a million questions. I also had to call their parents and explain to them what happened. Just a day in the life of a pumping teacher!
I don’t have any one particularly terrible story but have pumped in the car, bathrooms, my office and had my share of awkward walk ins! The Willow sounds like s life changer. I definitely want one for my next baby due in October!
With my first two kids, I pumped lots of awkward places. Backseat of the car, locker room with another woman showering next to me, parking garage. I just had my third child in January. He has been unable to latch and transfer milk. I am currently exclusively pumping. I mostly pump while driving to save time while taking care of my kids. I would love the convenience of not being attached to a bag in order to feed my child.
This sleep deprived, pumping mama typed her email address in wrong.
I am another with no horror stories from pumping exclusively after my first was born. I am due in July and can only think about how easy this will make my life to support me in breastfeeding my second while having a 3 year old to chase around. Not to mention how much less disruptive pumping will be when i return to work full time. It was the amount of time that i spent chained to the wall with my pump last time that eventually wore me down to the point where i had to stop pumping for my own mental well-being.
I am an elementary school teacher and could USE THIS. First of all, we all have a little darling who forgets their lunchbox in the room every day. Lucky me, I have two! So I spend a lot of time hooking up and unhooking to accommodate forgetful fifth grade boys. I’ve also been walked in on by a maintenance man, a fire marshal and almost a colleague and student because the only thing more fun than passing out Halloween candy are passing out master keys!
My worst pumping moment is EVERYTIME I spill my hard earned breastmilk! I have a very feisty little one who is obsessed with my pumping tubes. She has already lost me more ounces than she can count! Willow would be a game changer!!
Don’t cry over spilled milk… unless its breastmilk 😭
I pumped in my seat on an airplane flying from Detroit to Tulsa Oklahoma, it was interesring…
I would love to try the willow pump!! I am due in September with my 2nd. I exclusively pumped for 9 months with my first and could share many a story! I pumped while driving on a 4 hour road trip with my 8 week old (solo). While pumping at Work one day, I got distracted and didn’t notice my bottles had overflowed onto my lap making it appear I had wet my pants-only it smelled like milk. I had to walk all the way downstairs to my boss’s office to explain what happened and I either needed to excuse myself from the Board Meeting we were about to go into or be allowed to leave and go buy clean pants. I was allowed to go purchase pants but that was another round of humiliation going to the store.
Omg! The horror stories! The things moms do for their babies! I don’t have any horror stories to share (Yet), but I’m sure they are coming! I have been looking at the Willow and the next generation Freemie and would love to have an opportunity to try out handsfree pumping in a couple months!
My daughter was born on 3/2/18. I was so overwhelmed and had no help when it came to nursing or pumping, that on day 3 when my milk came in my husband found me on the floor of our bedroom in tears while reading the manual to the breast pump. I was leaking all over the carpet, from my breasts and my eyes! LOL! The willow sounds like a dream come true. I can focus on getting back to work or doing things around the house without having to read the manual each time (no joke, I read it every time!)
My worst pumping moment as a teacher was when I was pumping in another teacher’s office and a student (male 16ish) almost walked in on me. He had left his backpack in the office and needed to come back to get it. Luckily, I had locked the door, but unfortunately he was persistent. He asked another teacher to unlock the door, but she knew I was in there and what I was doing so she told him “No”. He then went to ask an administrator who did not realize what I was doing. He was about 2 feet away from the door with the key in hand before the first teacher (the one the student originally asked) stopped them. All this while I’m all hooked up and hearing the whole thing and hoping I can cover up in time if they make their way in. Producing is no good when I’m stressed!
This awesome bottle less pump looks great! I’m planning on a 3rd kiddo soon!
As a teacher I had to pump in a closet right beside the assistant principal’s office. I’m sure he could hear my loud clunky pump every time. It was so awkward!
I have a love hate relationship with pumping. I love being able to provide my baby with milk but I hate pumping. I hate the whole “I have to disappear for a bit but I’ll be back” it’s so uncomfortable. And makes me feel less valuable of an employee. The first or second day back to work after having my second baby, a new hire ignored my sign that said “please do NOT come in” and walked in. I was sitting with my back to the door but still half naked. He walked out as soon as he saw what was going on. But then proceeded to find me later and apologize, making it even more awkward. I’m still pumping now for my second child and hoping to keep going until her first birthday. I would love to try the willow!!
Hello to you! I found your stories pretty funny (if you’ve gotten to the point of being able to laugh at them 😅). I don’t have any breast pumping horror-stories, but with my first I had a massively hard time pumping. I knew I had a very heavy milk flow, but my pump wasn’t able to stimulate my milk like my breastfeeding babe did. So I was left with having to feed her quite often and now that she’s almost 3 I’ve noticed her appetite does seem way heavier than the normal child of that age. I’m expecting my second now due May 27, and this time around I’d really like to breastfeed her normally and pump the rest out. I would love to donate my milk as well to the hospital or to someone who needs it. That being said I would love to try this new, innovative breast pump! I’ll never be able to afford it on my own, but maybe it’ll work for me. Hope you see my message 💝
My worst pumping experience was in my own home 🤦🏼♀️ I was pumping for my second child, who was napping at the time, and I started to dose off on the couch. My oldest was becoming insanely jealous of the new baby so he came up and TWISTED the bottles off my pump. You would think I would wake up to the feeling of milk spraying all over me, but oh no. I was way too tired. I woke up to sore nipples and what seemed like 1/2 Gallon of milk all over me 😭. This is why I NEED this willow pump for my baby due in June. I would love to not give my children the opportunity to repeated that travesty.
I would LOVE a willow pump! The biggest thing for me is that the discretion would save me from so many more embarrassing pump stories🙈 pick me choose me save me! Lol I work in a small office and when I say small I mean nyc apt bedroom small. There’s only one bathroom for everyone to share and no outlet in there. So… every day I have to ask everyone in the office if they need the restroom before I hog it half an hr with my cord snaking out the bottom of the door across the room to reach the outlet. Needless to say I get my fair share of closed door comments and even a few knocks! One time I heard my boss ask if I was ok because I was in there so long 😳🙈so please pick me I would love to try this out and no longer be nicknamed “pumper” at the office 🙄🙋🏻♀️
I’m about to have my second in May and my son will be two. This sounds like an amazing invention and such a time saver for a busy mom!
I once had to pump at a wedding and when I’d filled the bags and was ready to once again hit the dance floor, I accidentally knocked into the carrier and spilled all the milk on the floor. Because of the location of the drain, the milk traveled three stalls down before disappearing. I wish I could have ducked out in horror but the other stalls were full and I missed the next four songs cleaning up the mess and apologizing to the other women.
My worst story was traveling for the first time and having to pump in an airport bathroom. I found a rather slow section of the airport and a quiet bathroom…or so I thought. Mid way through pumping, a women came in and of ALL the stalls (at least 10 empty)….she picked the one next to me and started puking. The smell, the sound, it was awful. Needless to say, I couldn’t finish pumping that round. I am also due with my second in September and would love to try this out!
Due July 29th and I’m going to need this in my life! Your story had my cracking up, only because I’ve been there! I’ve had to pump in bathroom stalls with a extension cord over the door, my car many times, and worst of all.. a storage room with no door lock. I put a note on the outside door but quickly realized most people don’t stop to read these things! Thanks for sharing!
I don’t have any horror stories yet as this has just recently become my reality! I exclusively breastfed my first until 11 months but now I have a boy who is not full! So I’m pumping and supplementing with formula. However having a toddler as well as a baby, there are usually not enough hands to do it all plus pump, so my supply has drastically gone down. A pump as handy as this would be a lifesaver!
Sooo many bad moments after pumping for 9 months! Worst time was probably during a flight. I had the window seat, a nice young girl about 20 years old in the aisle seat with an empty middle seat. The girl asked if she could sit in the middle seat so that her friend could sit in the aisle seat and they could chat. I said sure, as long as you guys don’t mind that I’ll need to pump. She says no problem but didn’t mention it to her friend who turned out to be a very feisty gay guy who started telling her stories about guys he had hooked up with at a party they recently went to. Once I put on the cover and started taking out parts, his face went from confused to sheer horror. He stopped talking for the entire 30 minutes I pumped and pointedly looked away when I took off the parts and combined the milk. The girl fell asleep during this time. Hey, mama has to pump!
My worst pumping moment happened while pumping in my office with door closed and blinds drawn over the interior windows. Since my office was on the third floor, I didn’t feel the need to close the blinds for the outside windows. That is until the window washers dropped down to my floor!
I am a teacher at an elementary school, so pretty much an all-women workforce. You’d think that might be a place where we would have a nice, relaxing area to do things like pumping, but alas, I am exiled to the storage room behind the library. A door, which, by the way, has no lock on it. But you wouldn’t think people would visit there often. I was walked in on a handful of times, but with it being my second baby most of the time I was just like, ‘whatever. Here’s my boobs.’
We have ONE male teacher at our school (and some administration and some coaches). And wouldn’t you know, he happened to be the lucky one to walk in one day. He has a wife and two children but when he walked in, he froze. It was the most awkward ‘5 seconds that felt like an eternity’ in my life. I had to make some statement like ‘whoa I’m busy in here!’ Or something before he apologized sheepishly and backed out of the room.
About to go back to work and start pumping for my third baby in a few weeks, and MAN; I’d love to have this Willow pump!! I could even stay and pump in my classroom (while the kids are gone) without crawling to the back corner of the school 2-3 times a day!
I was in our “pumping room” at work (complete with a sign on the outside that said “do not enter pumping in progress – super classy) when my BIG boss (from corporate) and a friend of hers in the company I had never met, knocked on the door and then immediately opened it without waiting for a reply (not that I had one- what do you even say? “Sorry, I’m milking myself, give me a minute!”) They froze when they realized what was going on, but instead of turning around and going out, my boss proceeded to try to have a formal conversation with me about health care packages and benefits and I don’t even remember what else because I was so mortified! And rather than trying to do that with the door closed, they stayed at the door, propping it open, the whole time! Oh, and did I mention I worked at a very prestigious daycare (where, yes, we had a coroprate office!) So tiny kids were walking by the whole time trying to get a sneak peek into the mysterious room Ms Heather went into every afternoon. The whole saga only lasted about 2 minutes but it felt like an hour and I’m pretty sure my milk just dried up on the spot and my pump was just whirring in vain because of how intensely embarrassed I was 😂😂
I’ll be a new momma in early May and would love to win this breast pump! I’ve already been dreading how I’ll pump when back at work and my health insurance is an older plan and doesn’t cover a breast pump 🙁 The Willow looks awesome!!
I’m reading this while I sit on the couch, pumping, trying to entertain my baby and my 3 year old unsuccessfully! The baby is getting mobile and does NOT like being restrained, and the three year old is, well, three! I need all the help I can get to make this Mom life easier!
This looks amazing to me! I’m expecting my 3rd child in June and will need something that allows me the freedom to keep up with my active 6yr & 4yr olds while still providing for #3 while I’m gone. I do in-home wine tastings and am gone 2-3 evenings a week…so pumping is a must! Love that I won’t need to be locked in to a chair while pumping!
Our pumping room at work is also a printer office. One day I was pumping and there was a knock (door is locked, sign on the door literally says “Lactation room, privacy please”). I thought it was another girl as work that I sometimes pump with because who doesn’t love a pumping partner?? I cracked the door and it’s some woman I’ve never met. She shoves the door open saying “I just need to grab something off the printer”. So I’m doing my best to cover the ladies and she tries to make small talk about how cool the new pumps are. All while leaving the door wide open. Flash forward a couple days and there’s another knock. Instead of opening the door I just said “I’m pumping”. She proceeds to stand at the door saying “I just need something off the printer” over and over until I let her in. Some people have zero boundaries 🙄
It’s a miracle that I am fully nursing my second child because my experience with #1 was horrific. I’m truly enjoying these bonding moments and took the maximum amount of time off at work this time around (only allowed 12 weeks & half of which is unpaid 😢). I head back to work in a few weeks and am currently debating if I should start introducing formula to ease with the transition. When I went back with the first one I was too busy to pump and my supply dropped down to nothing within two weeks. It breaks my heart to think that can happen but this new pump seems promising that I can pump in my office discretely. Also helps with the wardrobe choices 😉
I’m a first time mom-to-be and literally have NO maternity leave. My job is going to let me work from home for 6 weeks after giving birth (wow, thanks you guys!) but after that I’m expected to come back full time. I want what’s best for my baby and know that means I should breastfeed for as long as possible. Winning this pump would mean the world to me!
I don’t think any of my stories would be considered “horror” stories. I didn’t even have a pumping bra so every time I sat down to pump I had to hold the pump up to my nipples myself….and it seemed like every time I’d sit down to do this the phone would ring, the baby would start crying and the dogs would need out all at the same time!! Honestly I ended up hardly pumping at all because of how difficult it was to get through one pumping session without having to take a break to deal with something else. I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant and would LOVE a willow pump so I could still pump and get things done. This time around I will be caring for an in infant and a 18 month old little boy with LOTS of energy so I know that pumping with a traditional pump is going to pretty much be out of the question…but also there’s no way I could afford a willow on my own so I really hope I win! 🙂
I don’t have a worst pumping moment….yet! Unless you coubt my husband making fun of my nipples when I’m done. I go back to work in 5 days. I’d love to bring this pump and avoid havong my own horror stories
I’m just back to work after my maternity leave and I have an hour commute each way. I’m definitely interested in the Willow so i can pump during my commute and not take time away from my kiddos. I am also going to a 3 day music festival in June and asked my husband just last night, “how the hell will I pump?!?!” This is a perfect solution!!! Pick me, pick me 😁🙋
Ive never pumped outside the house for fear of not having somewhere to do it! I’ve always given in and supplemented formula when I went back to work.
This time around I will have a 17 month old and a newborn and would love to be able to pump, especially hands free to be able to tend to my toddler without being connected to a machine lol!
I’ve pumped in my classroom, in a resting room in the nurse’s office that didn’t have a lock, and an office where laptops were stored that any faculty or staff member could walk into at any time. I’ve also had coverage fail to show up or, when they did, fail to discipline or maintain my class while I was gone. Teachers are afforded the least amount of patience and understanding when it comes to pumping. We take care of everyone else’s children, but how dare we try to care for our own?
My worst pumping experiences don’t involve inadvertent exposure, only bottles of spilled milk (still upsetting!). My pump just broke yesterday and I’m determined to avoid buying a brand new pump since I’m nursing our last kid and she’s already 7 months. I have at least 2 friends who could use the pump after I’m done with it.
I’ve just returned to work after having bebe #3, so this pumping room that I’m in (at this very minute, milking myself, lol!), and I are old friends.
I have to say that my worst pumping moment was reaching that seemingly inevitable point where your milk supply starts dwindling and you’re desperate to get it ramped back up, so that liquid gold is GOLDEN, every last drop. Well, this room is dedicated to pumping only (thankfully), but there are tons of women having babies around here, so the room has a TIGHT schedule. Like, you’d better have your things gathered and be walking out the door the moment your session ends, because someone else is waiting to get in there. After having my first baby and coming back to work, I was adjusting to a LOT and trying to get my pumping time in. One day I was running behind and had just gotten my shirt back on when a key turned in the lock and as I turned to look, my not-yet-quite-closed bag of milk spilled all over the counter and all over my pants. Not only was all that pumping for naught and the milk gone, but I was standing there covered in milk and then trying frantically to clean it up and get out of there so the next person (standing there staring at me!) could pump. Good times. Needless to say, I am taking MUCH more care in handling these days! 😄
I had to pump in the back of a pickup truck for a work training, not very cozy haha
With my first child I travelled a lot for work so I had to get over my fear of pumping in public. On one trip to Chicago our plane was delayed and I lost my window of time to pump at the client’s office before a meeting so I pumped on the train next to coworkers and strangers. The second time around has been much easier mentally with all the courage I built up the first time.
I would love this pump – I’m pumping for my 3 month old plus have a 2 & 4 year old so life is always crazy and I’m always on the move! Working full time, it would be amazing to not have to spend time pumping so I could leave at the end of the day sooner and get more time at home with my kids! I wish I could afford one because they look absolutely amazing! 🙌🏻 Thanks for the chance to win!
I travel for work and learned what airports are more friendly than others. If you can believe it, the Denver airport has zero options. So before boarding I pumped at the gate with a dad, and son, sitting across from me (yes I cover while pumping) and folks to my left and right. I timed my flights so I could pump when I got to the next airport, but after boarding and then deplaning, I again had to pump at the gate after crying to the flight attendant that my already pumped milk needed to be refrigerated. Then, because of the delay, had to pump ON the plane, with an older gentleman sitting next to me. It was an exciting trip home, but all my milk survived.
I’m pregnant with my second. Several awkward pumping moments, but by far my worst was when I was pumping in an office that didn’t lock and a cockroach crawled inside my pants and up my leg. I was sitting there without a shirt on and jumped up, ripped my pants off and waved them around until the little creep fell out. It took several minutes for me to work up the courage to get dressed after that, and I spent the rest of the day with my pants tucked into my socks. *shudder*
Oh my goodness. I just had my baby girl a little over a month ago and pumping is such a pain, plus it’s time consuming. I can’t get myself to do it consistently, which affects my milk production. It would be amazing to be able to try this out!!
I had a 9 hour training for work. They told me that I could pump in the “server room” which was a freezing filthy closet with no lock on the door. I proper s chair against the door but still someone walked in on me.
Nice Post,
