There’s a new form of parenting humor cropping up in an unlikely place— the well curated feeds of picture perfect moms on Instagram. You know those moms? The ones who seemingly have the parenting thing all figured out, including their aspirational parenting aesthetic? With their hipster high chairs, their slightly off kilter wall galleries and their trendy rain boots propped next to their empty coatrack with one lone umbrella leaning perfectly from it’s stand, it’s hard to relate to a lot of the Instamoms we see at the top of our “”popular” page on Instagram.

I mean, I have about 25 umbrellas shoved into a stand and not one of them has a curved wooden handle. And how does she find the time to crochet pillows when she has FIVE kids? Why do her children look like they’ve been sent here from the ’40s? Why aren’t they pulling off their handknit bonnets or throwing their wooden toys at their siblings or refusing to bathe in a sink full of flower petals like regular kids?

But look closer at some of these Instagram feeds and you might notice something that hints at the fact that their experiences with children aren’t so dissimilar from our own. These hints come in the form of parenting quotes on old school letter boards, which has become the Instamom’s equivalent of badly designed parenting memes on Facebook.

These letter boards have been made popular by a company called “Letterfolk” which sells boards and curates their favorite quotes on their popular Instagram feed, inspiring aspiring Instamoms (myself included) to buy one (guilty) and get in on the act.

With that last one, I’m gonna call a spade a spade. The irony is THICK.
