Families belong together. Children should not be separated from their parents or their siblings. The American people should not be arguing over the definition of a cage. Have you listened to the audio file of crying kids being taken from their parents at the border? It made me want to vomit. And then, in an act either so ridiculously stupid or purposefully designed to really hammer their message home (I believe the latter), Melania Trump, America’s first lady, showed up to visit a migrant detention center wearing a jacket that said, “I don’t really care, do you?”
YES. I REALLY DO.
The policy of separating children from their parents is heartless and immoral and one of the lowest points in our country’s history. I know that Trump signed an executive order to end the practice of separating families at the border (the same practice he put in place with his zero tolerance policy, by the way), but that doesn’t do anything for the thousands of kids already separated. Many of those kids have already been shipped across the country (some to NYC in the middle of the night), thousands of miles away from their parents with no plans to reunite them. Also, the new policy allows the government to detain families together in detention centers/camps/repurposed Walmarts/tents/cages/whatever— indefinitely, which might not be as bad as ripping children away from their parents, but it is still awful and reminiscent of some of the worst moments in our history.
I have had many people from Mexico and Central America reach out to me personally, telling me horrible stories of what their families are trying to escape by crossing the border and seeking asylum. These are not criminals. They are mothers and fathers who are seeking safety and better lives for their kids. Any one of us would hope that if placed in a similar situation, we would be brave enough to do the same. Instead, they are trading one nightmare for another.
Our country’s current administration is morally corrupt l and I have no place in my heart for people who can’t see that anymore. This is not a political debate. It is an issue of human decency.
If you’d like to know how you can help, my friends at Feed Our Democracy put together an excellent list of action you can take and places you can donate, along with news updates as they occur.
Thanks for using your platform to shine a light on the issue. I’m sure you’ve lost followers and readers because of it but it just speaks to the genuine person you are. I always appreciate your opinion on things and links to take action. It remind me to always be a part of the political conversation and put my money where my mouth is.

Love you so much for doing this post! I agree with everything. The audio of the children crying for their parents is the worst thing I have ever heard, and it’s BEYOND me how anyone (and anyone who is a parent, no less!) can listen to it and say “Well, they shouldn’t have come over.” No matter what anyone believes about immigration, it’s beside the point. They are KIDS. My heart aches for the 2300 kids still separated. We need to keep the focus and pressure on them, so they are reunited soon.
Thank you for your post. You vocalize my thoughts so well. it is just wrong!
Thank you/ Gracias
We in Luxury Cleaning NYC believe that the family is above all and should always stay together. It’s scary what’s happening now.
It is more horrifying seeing the ugliness and hatred from fellow Americans.. We look back at history often wondering, how did regular people standby to the injustices happening to other humans. Now you can see how it would be possible, it is beyond disgusting and scary. We must continue to support companies who are speaking out and VOTE for candidates who will stop this attack on American democracy, and basic human decency…..
You are spot on about the real reasoning behind Roe v. Wade- being able to control women.
While I do not believe it will outright be overturned, and many conservatives have even indicated they have no desire to do that b/c it’s “not the time”, that doesn’t mean they won’t be chipping away at it, making the restrictions so significant that it will essentially be unavailable even without overturning.
While I despise all the ugliness coming out of this administration and what it has brought out of our country, I also feel we need to focus more on the real issues than the angry, despicable tweets and comments. The number of judges being appointed- for life- in federal courts that have frightening views on equality, race, and women is disturbing, yet you do not hear about it on the news or in the papers b/c we are busy being outraged about the latest outrage- which is completely understandable. We have been relying on the judicial branch of our govenrment to keep things from going completely crazy, but soon we won’t even have that.
Get out and vote, and pay close attention to your LOCAL elections! Don’t skip those- they will be oh so important if issues get sent back to states….
I’ve been sick to my stomach since Kennedy’s retirement announcement. I just feel so disheartened and helpless, we have failed so many generations to come.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for continuing to speak out about this horrific policy and those who support it. I am truly frightened at the thought of what type of country we will handing to our children and grandchildren. 🙁
Thank you for speaking the truth. If you lose followers, they aren’t worth our time.
